Need help running slackware10
How do I setup my new video old video card information and startup a desktop? Need explicit command line instructions, plez.
Its been 483 days since i last booted into slackware10. I managed to install it as a Loadlin dual boot with and new old ATI RAGE Pro Ultra AGP 4X,32mb. After I installed the software, I couldn't compile a kernel or setup a graphical desktop w/o getting errors, navigating around from command line was all just taking up to much time and I gave up. Now I want to try again and was wondering if I should just start over since I can't startX or anything... My box is an old system so I wouldn't really need slackware11 unless it would facilitate using a cordless keyboard and mouse that was made for mac..lol |
Try running command xorgconfig ?
Back sure have the information about your card before running it!Oh and run the command as root. The command is Code:
su put in your root password and press enter. Then run Code:
xorgconfig setup you video card. |
'xorgsetup' typically gives better results. I'm not sure that's the only problem here. I feel there are many more. Try reading the slackbook.

Can't boot up now..
Thanks guys but now I get kernal panic when I try to boot up w/boot disk. Where am I suposed to store my working kernel? In root? or home/root?
I have Explore2fs and I had setup in usr/home: X11-xdg-xfce4 and a working desktop apparently In root there is:.Xauthority, bash_ history, xinitrc, loadlin.txt and loadlin.zip thats it? PS. have Slack Essentials 1st edition and a few others...go figure. Also says slackware harddrive is hdb2, my notes say: /dev/hdg2 SWAP /dev/hdg1 / ext2 /dec/hdg3 /usr ext2 /dev/hdg4 /home ext2 I forgot where am i supose to mount root to boot from boot disk? |
Firstly, answer why do you need loadlin?
How many hard drives do you have? Kernel is placed at /boot |
Have 2 HDD DualBoot
Please see signature for system specs. Thanks
I prefer Loadlin. I can always pull up DOS, windows and get online for help with Slackware because of usr error. Unfortunately most post kernal building for Lilo:scratch: Loadlin doesn't have to be reinstalled as much as Lilo according to all the forum post I browse. |
Ok. Don't know how your disk becomes hdg (there should be hda, hdb, hdc, hdd, hde, hdf before -6, even I see 5 devices in your sig (Maxtor hdd, Seagate hdd, hdd with Slackware, Asus cdrom, Plex cdrom).
What are the errors when you startx? Did you run xorgsetup? What are the errors when you boot without boot disk? |
Was able use boot disk
I never compiled a kernel so i use boot disk. Think I will just start all over w/Slaclware11 this time. Because I don't remember everything i did 483days ago.
lol See I am building a new box just for photo editing and want to try to use this old box as a file server because I don't want to retire my old mobo, cpu, ram till they die. Think it will be easier to just install v11 as trying to figure and configure V10?? Are the 10GB good enough? |
You could try to use the 2.6.17.13 kernel
when you reinstall slack.. maybe it'll work better. 10 Gb will be plenty for slack even a full install. |
Thankyou

IIRC Patrick changed all compilings in 11.0 to i486.
|
Why not compile it for your processor, a Pentium III, I see.
|
PIII = i ### :confused:
Sorry, I am not up on the technical fineries' of Intel architectural designations, a PIII is i???. Thanks
|
It is i686, but that doesn't matter too much. When compiling the kernel select the one marked 'Pentium-III/Celeron(Coppermine)/Pentium-III Xeon'.

What size partitions do I need?
Would this be right since I have a dual boot with 2 HDDs: hda is win98 primary 1st ide controller
hdc is slackware primary 2nd ide controller root= hdc1 = /swap swap= hdc2 = / home= hdc3 = /home usr = hdc4 = /usr /, /swap, /usr, /home Reason for this scheme is designate exact size for swap root doesn't get disturbed except for modified file in /etc and root's home directory, if i want to upgrade w/o having to backup home directories, /usr can keep software when upgrading distro. 2. How much space should I dedicate to each base on 10gbs? 3. What file system should I use if I want to expand this machine into a file server? |
