Need help installing Win codecs please
 

I am using Slackware 10.2 with KFce I am receiving error messages while viewing certain web pages the error messages say that G zine needs a Plug in.

I found this How to article on the internet, followed the instructions mkdir /usr/lib/win32 extracted the download tar -jxf essential20050412tar.bz2 cd essential20050412tar.bz2 mv * /usr/lib/win32 after I did all that I rebooted the computer clicked on a video, G zine pops up, no error messages, G zine just sits there and hangs.

Any idea how to make G zine work ? would I be better of removing G zine from the computer and replaceing it with a better video/ MPG/ player ?

Can you post a link to one of the sites which don't work for you? Just so that I can check that it works OK with my config before trying to help you.

You didn't mention it in your post and it isn't mentioned either in one of the links you mention, but did you "tell" Gzine (or Xine) via preferences where your win32 codecs reside on disk. You need to do that.
I use the same codecs and it works perfectly.

I don't know what else to do, I followed the instructions step by step gxine is still hanging. The mouse will not allow me to copy and paste text from websites so I cannot copy and paste anything onto this web forum. The download is located inside of the home location. I tried to extract the folders using XFce -s File Manager' instead of the command line, this time around. The files began extracting then a error message came up saying that there was no such directory. The error message is full of crap. I am able to cd into the /usr/lib/win32 directory so that tells me right there that the /usr/lib/win32 directory dose exist. I don't know what else to do and this not being able to copy and paste stuff from websites is driving me nuts.

u should check mozilla>help>about plugins and see if gxine is one of plugins used. Have u installed flashplayer? Or RealPlayer10GOLD? flashplayer plugin and helix player plugin should be listed along with gxine plugin. What site have u tried that fails?

This installation is messed up I cannot copy text from web pages and then paste the text on to web forms- text editors- nowhere the copy- paste method is not working I don't know why.

Setting the correct path in gxine for your codecs.
From the menu: File -> Preferences
Tab "Decoder" and in "win32_codecs_path" the location, e.g. /usr/lib/win32 as you specified.

Opening MIME files in Mozilla Mail/Thunderbird/KMail and so on:
- If you would like to play "binary" attachments, you will most possbibly only see the "Save as.." option. The "Open with" option is inactive.
This is due to the fact that the MIME type is not known. You have to specifiy this to your mail client (and sometimes browser).
- Create in your home directory the following file .mime.types (mind the proceeding dot and lowercase).
Add to this file the following entries:
video/mpeg mpeg mpg mpe mp4 mov
video/x-msvideo avi wmv asf

You can also add entries for torrent files or ED2K links and so on.

Next time Mozilla Mail/Thunerbird/KMail will asl oenable the option "Open with" and you can choose your favorite mediaplayer, for you so far: gxine.

If you want to make it system wide (for all users) you have to create a mime.types file (without preceeding dot) in /etc

I asked for an URL of a page that doesn't work. Not for an URL of the instructions you followed, nor the contents of a page that doesn't work. See?

I've run Slackware since 9.1 and never even knew there was a gxine until 10.2.
I installed the Flashplayer plugin and now I don't get the gxine errors, but Flash
displays what the system wanted to use gxine to display.

Download Flash from Macromedia and install according to those instructions.
It's one of the easiest installers you'll find for Linux.

I believe you'll not see the gxine plugin messages again.

Gxine is one of serveral gui front ends to xine-lib. Two other front ends are totem and the xine-ui (UserInterface). Where xine-lib looks for codecs is initially specified when xine-lib is compiled

The mplayer developers changed the default location for the codecs to /usr/lib/codecs pointing out that there are other codecs (realplayer and quicktime) that have nothing to do with Microsoft windows.

You need to see where your version of xine-lib is looking for the codecs. You can change this by going in the preferences of gxine to where ever you installed the codecs (usr/lib/win32).

The plugins described in some of the previous posts are misleading. Gxine actually installs its own plugins in your browsers plugin directory (same place the flash plugins go).

The other problem you may be having is that some streaming video links are embeded in java scripts and are difficult for linux based apps to pull out the link to the actual stream. The CNN homepage is like this.

This streams fine on gxine for me.

Thanks for the replies I knew that there was some sort of error on their part because I tried everything and nothing worked.

Right now I managed to twink the settings so they would support WMV and MPG format everything is now ok on that end the only problem that I am having now is web pages opening with a message saying Gxine browser plug in the webpage will not display the full web page in its entirety.

I went through all this trouble just to find out that the plug ins described in the previous how tos and every other one posted on the net (all of them were the same) all over the web were misleading.


I THink I might be able to fix this error by installing Macromedia.

The direction on MMs site say unpack the file to a directory the only problem is I don't know the command to unpack the file I am guesing that it is something like xfvx file name ..... Plus I don't know how to navigate to the install linux flash_ player_ directory (This not being able to copy and paste text from websites is really annoying the hell out of me. I'm most certain that I will be set when I learn the command to Unpack the macromdeia player that I downloaded and then saved to my home directory then learen how to cd ? navagate ? to that directory. I knew all along that the instructions from the how to were no good because I did everything that everyone told me to do and nothing worked.

I have just given up on this type of thing in Linux. In Windoze
it just worked, and as you say, the instructions in Linux are
sometimes difficult to follow, esoteric, and conflict each other.

Jeremy (LQ's root owner) has an article about compiling from
source, but for Macromedia's Flash all you need to do is cd
(change directory) to where you've downloaded it, then issue
"tar -zxvf install_flash_player_7_linux.tar.gz" then issue
"cd install_flash_player_7_linux" then "./flashplayer-installer"
as the instructions say. Should be a pretty easy install.

Please report back what happens, as other people are following
this thread, and will find it searching later, also.

Just a question. Maybe you answered it already and I just missed it. When you untar the tarballs, the codecs are untared into a directory. Did you move the directory into /usr/lib/win32 or did you cd into the essential* dir and move only the codecs to /usr/lib/win32?

I tried everything nothing worked I have a feeling that the desktop that I am using right now (XFce) dose not have execute/Root privileges.

XFce-s architecture is different then gnones maybe I'm doing something wrong but I don't think so. The download is located inside of my home directory the download is listed as (I am not able to copy-paste text from websites this is driving me insane. The name of the download is linix _7 etc etc as listed in my previous post.

Here is the method that I am using to install the download.

Open Terminal

password

tar zvf file name after that I press enter then a error message comes back saying that there is no such directory.

I also tried tried to "cd" into that directory by using the command> cd "enter" then

/home/username file name' press enter, then after that a message comes back saying that there is no sure directory.

I also tried cd enter

file name >enter<

no such directory <<

I don't know what else to do.

When I start XFce a error message comes up saying that it could not look up Internet address for gateway this will prevent XFce from running correctly it maybe possible to correct the problem by adding gateway to the file /etc/host/ That might have something to do with the reason why I am not able to copy and paste text from websites as well as the download not extracting/working/ But I doubt it because My full gateway address is already located inside of the file /etc/host/. Also when I clicked on the link to download the file, the only option available was "save to disk."

I have a feeling that this problems might have something to do with root execute privileges. I can either use KDE or XFce startx boots KDE startxfce4 boots XFce

Right now I am using XFce.....

The first codecs yeah.. but not the second download The flash player/download is located inside of my home directory... I don't even think that the second download is extracted.
