Unhappy need a little help gettin X windows to work

Have an old PC running linux for over a year now as a server of sorts, and decided to install X on it finally.

First problem... Took me forever to find the info for an old monitor I got.
Its a Phillips consumer electronics CM9039 14" monitor. I think it's only VGA. Anyways I found out the Horizontal is 31.5 and the vertical range is 60 - 70 kHz.

Next... Took a while to figure out the video card. The markings on it spoke of Video Pro 64.. and some other bs, no mention of a brand name. Turns out its an ARK Logic 2000 PV. or so I think. I also think it has 1 MB of video memory, since the bios detects 1024 Kb of memory on boot up.

At first I still had slack 8.1 on the system. After numerous days of painful tweaking I read somewhere that the XFree on slack 8.1 is something which is version 4.2 doesnt support the ark driver. That I'd have to revert to Xfree 3.36 or get 4.3.

Of course I tried just upgradding Xfree and its dependencies. When that didn't work, I thought, hey, maybe getting slack 9.1 is the answer. Numerous days later and painfull amounts of time configuring the system I turn to you.

Here is my XF86config

My results are as follow...

When I use the ark driver and default depth of 8 bits, upon startx I get an exception. Xfree says it caught a signal 11. Readin extensively about this signal, I've read that its either a hardware error or a software error. Seeing as I only get this error when trying to run X, I'm guessing its a software error.

Here is the error log...
(actually on next post since it doesnt fit)

Ok, my next result...
If I use the ark driver and default depth of 16 bits, I get garbage image. A lot of lines running horizontally and skewed. Also, the system is frozen and I need to reboot. Yes i tried ctrl alt backpace, ctrl c, ctrl fn, etc. Its frozen good.

next result...

If I use the Standard VGA and 8 bits, I get a picture! However, its only on the lower half of the screen and the resolution is horrible. Just this one sentence would fill up the viewing area on that resolution. Plus I cant see the upper half of the screen. Which makes it impossible to try to drag windows down to the viewable area. And it just plain stinks.

Trying higher resolutions or more depth has failed. I would think I need to use the ark driver for that.

I was thinking about getting SWareT and upgradding to Xorg to see if that helps. I never heard of Xorg until recently so I am not sure if it would make a difference.

Other than that, if its a hardware problem I don't know if it is the monitor or the video card. And things look good until you try to run X. I might try to run MS windows some day. but I think it would run.

Any suggestions on what I should try would be appreciated.

it seems that even the lowest resolution demands a higher horizontal refresh rate. try changing:
HorizSync 31.5

to something like
HorizSync 31.5 - 50

and just see what happens. Then check the log and see what refreshrate it settled on, and re-edit xorg.conf to lock it to that refresh rate.

Thanks for the reply...

I changed the Horizontal sync range as was suggested. For some reason it said my mouse failed, I added AllowMouseOpenFail and will fix that later.

Using the ark driver and a depth of 8 bits, XFree didn't just exit saying a signal this time. But it did freeze my system with a garbage picture of horizontal lines.
Here is the log for that... It appears its now complaining about the vertical range...

no replies yet? Does it look like I am doing things okay and its just not working?

I'd like to think its a hardware problem and buy a new monitor or a new video card, but since it sorta works when I choose standard VGA driver, it makes me reluctant to think its hardware.

as far as the mouse, you can try changing /dev/mouse to the actual device (eg /dev/ttyS0)
also maybe manually choose the correct protocol instead of auto

the vid problem...hmm...the console works fine in standard vga?
have you tried disabling framebuffer support?

It's nothing more that a mouse configuration problem:
"(EE) xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/mouse
Input/output error.
(WW) Mouse1: cannot open input device"
See if /dev/mouse exists and if it's pointing the correct place.

Well, my mouse was working before, and I was gettign the same results. I'm not sure why the mouse doesn't work, but I thought AllowMouseOpenFail would let me bypass this problem for now. When I use The standard VGA driver, X does load up, and I can't move the mouse, which verifies its not working properly.

About framebuffering, I'm not sure how to do that, but I will give it a try. Does the standard VGA driver nto use framebuffering?

after some research , i've found "fbset" command. It says "open /dev/fb0: No Such Device". What does frame buffering do, and do I need it to get X working?

I also foudn this..

To set the used video mode for X insert the following in rc.local:

fbset -fb /dev/fb0 vga

and make the used frame buffer device known to X:

export FRAMEBUFFER=/dev/fb0

Should I try that?

Right now, your mouse causes the server abort. So fix that first and see what happens next. Watch for lines starting with (EE) in your log file. Those are the show stoppers most of the time.

on my previous post , the log file, does anyone else see a big grey rectangle blocking some of the information? Maybe i'm seeign things..

In nay case I found some info on the Xfree 3.36 release. ..

ARK2000PV (ark2000pv)

64-bit version of the ARK1000PV. Note that an ARK2000PV equipped with 1Mb of DRAM is about equivalent to the same card with an ARK1000PV chip; 2Mb is required for 64-bit operation. Again the RAMDAC used on the card determines the max supported dot clocks. At 8bpp, multiplexing over a 16-bit RAMDAC path is not yet supported so expect dot clocks up to 110 MHz; 16bpp and 32bpp are supported, as well as experimental packed 24bpp, depending on the RAMDAC.

I have no idea why some one would make an ARK2000PV with 1 mb of vram, but that is what I have.

So in the XF86config file i tried:

Chipset "ark1000pv"

I still got similar results. Except the lines through the screen weren't as linear and there seemed to be less color to this garbage picture.

My second though is about ...
II) LoadModule: "fb"
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libfb.a
(II) Module fb: vendor="The XFree86 Project"
compiled for 4.3.0, module version = 1.0.0
ABI class: XFree86 ANSI C Emulation, version 0.2

Xfree is loading the fb module, so I may not need to mess around with fbset ?????

My final thought is...
let me get rid of (WW)..

1) (WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such device)
I know thats in the kernel so I'll recompile the kernel for that.

2) (WW) System lacks support for changing MTRRs
Not sure what that is, but it might be in the kernel, so I'll take look there.

I fixed the APM warning, a simple "modprobe apm" did the trick.

However, I don't know why it is giving me the MTRR warning.

MTRR is enabled in my kernel and it is not a module, so it should be working.

However, I couldn't find the file /proc/mtrr so i'm guessing that something is wrong.

Any one know how I can get MTRR going?
I'm using the general 386 processor configuration in the kernel.
Do I need to be more specific and choose another x86.?
I did not do this when I compiled the kernel since I wasn't sure what my PII MMX 200 MHz would fall under (486 or 586).

would anyone recommend I upgrade to the latest XFree86, 4.4 I think? Would that work well on slack 9.1 or should I upgrade to slack 10?
