Need a good version of Firefox...
 

Hi,

I'm looking for a good place to download Firefox 1.5 or 2.0 for Slackware 10.2, I downloaded Firefox 1.5 from LinuxPackges and ran the INSTALLPKG thing, it put an icon in /USR/SHARE/APPLICATIONS/ but it won't open when I click on it.

What happens if you run "firefox" from the command line?

What is the result of "which firefox".

I would say that /usr/share/applications is not where the firefox executable is - it should be in /usr/bin.

The /usr/share/applications/ is where the firefox.desktop file is.

/usr/bin/ has a firefox shell script that points to a firefox location in /usr/local/lib/firefox..... but the folder /usr/local/lib/ is completely empty.

Thus, I need a place where I can get a good version of it.

have you tried the Slackware website?

Edit: updated link, just noticed you said you were running 10.2.

Just download from the official Mozilla download site and follow their installation instructions. It's maybe a 2 minute job

Download the latest official package, mozilla-firefox-1.5.0.8-i686-1.tgz from the slackware-10.2/patches/packages directory of any slackware mirror

Go for Version 1.5
 

Though not a Slackware user, I strongly support this suggestion by Eternal_Newbie. I used Firefox 2.0 (from the Mozilla site) for about two weeks and reverted to Firefox 1.5 which performs much more nearly the way I want it to (note I say nearly). Version 2.0 gave me all sorts of problems in operation and is missing features I had in 1.5.

Just in case you were thinking of v. 2.0, this is one user's disappointed opinion of it. (I note that you were already looking for v. 1.5, though. Good!)

Interesting. I have Slack 11.0 and 2.0 is way better than 1.5 in terms of stability. I was getting sick of the crashes I had with 1.5.x, I almost got to the point of using Seamonkey (Mozilla) as the primary browser but fortunately 2.0 turned out to be a lot more stable. I use it with the experimental Flash 9 plugin and I didn't have any crashes except occasional Flash-related problems. There are a couple of usability issues in 2.0 that suck though (I don't know why they made those changes).

I wish I could use 2.0 and have it work well as yours does. (Apart from the usability issues, that is. One thing they did that has caused disappointment in users is to go to the GTK dialog box at least for some functions, which is very awkward to use. There is an involved way to correct this, but I'm afraid I don't have my notes anymore...)

They are currently three version
1.5,2.0,3.0

I'm not using the 3.0 because I miss some extensions.
I use the 2.0 with no crash.
BUT I don't have flash, I don't have crappy extensions ;-)

And in case there is a crash, I rename my .mozilla to ._mozilla and try. And also look at ~/.xsession-errors
For example beryl/compiz in 16b depth mode with firefox crashes on my system, that's known.

It would be interesting that people having problems really report them, rather than giving so few information. Because for most of the persons, all three versions work perfectly.

I'm currently using Firefox 1.5.0.1, Slackware 10.2 (2.6.13) with no issues or problems. Sure some of the bleeding edge pluggins require 2.0 minimum. But who cares, I just use the browser for LQ and some google. Most of my machine work is via cli.

Most of the problems I've seen are pluggin related.

As they say 'WYSIWYG'.

I'm using FF 2.0 on my windows machine, my Slackware machines, and my FreeBSD box (I compiled FF 2.0 from source for BSD). I've been lucky I haven't had any crashes or strange behaviour yet with FF 2.0 (with Slack and BSD). For my Slackware machines I downloaded the flash 9 package from linuxpackages.net (it works well).
I've had FF 2.0 crash on my windows machine when I've gone to some java websites. Java works well on my Slackware machines running FF 2.0:-)

If you are not using version 1.5.0.8, log on to my website at www.dmatloff-enterprises.com for the latest version. Make sure when you unpack it, that you place it in the "etc" folder. Good Luck, Aplus:Pengy:

Another good alternative is Swiftfox. They have an install script that makes the install extremely easy. And it seems to run quite a bit faster than the standard Firefox. I've successfully installed it on Suse 10.2, Vector 5.8 (Slackware), an Ubuntu 6.06.
