nebie help

HI Im having a boot problem, I've installed slackware 10.2 from cd and had a successful install and made a backup boot floppy. Now when I removed the floppy and restarted my pc I get an error that says

GRUB Loading stage 1.5

GRUB Loading, please wait.
Error 17

now thats all it does it doesnt boot. However when I insert the Floppy and reboot its says "

Welcome to slackware, by default this disk boots a root linux on /dev/hda2
when u hit enter. etc etc.

Now my question is am I supposed to be using this boot disk? Im under the impression that it is a "Backup" boot disk. Anyways I go ahead and press enter and heres what folows:

loading vmluniz...
etc etc

Welcome to Linux 2.4.31 (ttyl)

darkstar Login:

Now at the login prompt I type root and enter my password at the prompt
and it says stuff like last login, you have mail, and then this prompt:

root@darkstar:~#

What am I supposed to do now?

BTW I had Linspire installed on this harddrive earlier but i chose to delete its partition and install slackware only, could any problems arise from that?
Thanx for your help.

Not sure about your problem with GRUB, but you've logged in now, so that's good! One of the first things you should do is create a normal user, so you don't have to run as root all the time. You can see how to do that here. After that, maybe logout from root (just type "exit" without quotes at the prompt), log in as your new user and type "startx", without quotes. That should give you a graphical environment to work with. If it doesn't work first time, you might wanna look at this. Here you'll find links for the entire book that the other links I've posted are from. Have a look at it and learn about Slack :D.

HTH.

Hi watmonki, once you log in to the system, you can do anything you want, I guess what you're looking for is a GUI :)
Try reading this, it will give you some information about what you can do on command-line and also how you can start the X server (graphical mode): http://slackbook.org
