named record

Today when booting I noticed a message, specifically -

Code:
cat /var/log/syslog|grep missing
Aug 19 04:27:33 missi named[1437]: checkhints: b.root-servers.net/A (199.9.14.201) missing from hints

Subsequently I ran slackpkg update and received -

Code:
$ slackpkg update

Not sure if these two things are related or completely independent. Both have started today. Everything was normal yesterday.

Your thoughts please.

You could try another mirror and see if the problem persist. E.g. http://slackware.uk/people/alien/sbr...urrent/x86_64/

Could be some temporary issue with bear.alienbase.nl. There was another thread a few days ago where one user found it extremely slow.
Anyway, Eric hasn't updated anything since August 6. I hope that the reason is that he's enjoying a well-deserved holiday.

Yeah, I figured Eric was on holiday as he has been quiet for a while. Will give another mirror a try. Has anyone any thoughts on the checkhints message in my syslog??

Looks like we might need a named.root update.

Looks like the slackpkgplus site (slackfinder.org) isn't showing up in the registry. Comment the repository out of slackpkgplus.conf (REPOPLUS= & MIRRORPLUS= lines) for now.

Code:
bash-5.0$ whois slackfinder.org

Read the file /usr/doc/Linux-HOWTOs/DNS-HOWTO and search for the string "Al Longyear"

I guess that's the geek equivalent of "go that way a couple miles, watch for the house with the carved eagle in the front yard and the big grain silo by the barn, then you turn right..."

(I grew up in the midwest USA, the eastern end of the grain belt, and yes sometimes those directions are still the best way to tell someone how to go somewhere.)

Thanks Richard Cranium for pointing me to that script. It works just fine. I'm one of those sorry souls who hardly ever RTFM.
