name server in Slackware. Configuration question

In my network i have a server machine. It is connected to a ip thru a ext. name server. (It responds www queries). Now i want to set up a mail server. Do i have to add a CNAME in the External name server so that the computer also responds to mail.domain.com, or do i have to set up my own nameserver?

qmail error when trying to configure qmail is:

-----------
Your hostname is server.
soft error
Sorry, I couldn't find your host's canonical name in DNS.
You will have to set up control/me yourself.

Most likely if your DNS server your using only refers to something like www.domain.com and domain.com, yes, you will need to add something like mail.domain.com so it knows how to find it from my understanding.

i did a nslookup on mail.domain.com, and it seems like mail.domain.com works already. Actually both www.domain.com and mail.domain.com gives the same output when querying via http. How can i then make qmail figure that my domain name is domain.com ? Do i even have to set up a local name server ?
