My VIA graphics card is not recognized by Slackware 13.1


Hello

I have a Mini-ITX VIA EPIA LT series motherboard running Slackware 13.1

Graphics card is not recognized properly.

But the graphics is OK the first half of the boot, then it turns weird and stays that way.

The screen is very dark, tux in the upperhand left corner is colored wrong. (Red, Purple, Green)

I did a Xorg -configure, and this is the content of xorg.conf.new:

Your graphics are being recognised and Xorg is attempting to use the openchrome driver.
You may need to look at using the VIA proprietary driver. http://www.via.com.tw/en/support/drivers.jsp

There is no S3 UniChrome Pro drivers for Slackware at the VIA site.

Try booting with vga=normal and see if X works fine with the openchrome drive then.

I found out that vga=normal is a lilo parameter.

It does no difference.

You may be able to get a Debian rpm and use rpm2tgz.

Latest openchrome drivers

Hello

I have downloaded, compiled and installed the latest version of the openchrome driver.

I followed the install instructions here:

No change.

During the first part of the boot, your graphics is being driven using a standard VESA mode. This is OK.
The kernel then attempts to initialise a console frame buffer. This is when your problems appear. You may be able to fix this by adding a line like ' append = " video=viafb:viafbmode=1280x1024,viafb_bpp=32" ' to your /etc/lilo.conf. See /usr/src/linux/Documentation/fb/viafb.txt for possible options.

Are you having problems when running X? Re-reading your posts it seems that you want help with the boot problem, rather than with running X.

No - you are better off with that created by Xorg -configure.
If you having problems with the cursor display when in X, then using ' Option "SWCursor" "true" ' may help.
X runs fine. No problem there, its the console mode thats wrong.

I will try adding that to lilo.conf

I have now tried appending the line: append = " video=viafb:viafbmode=1280x1024,viafb_bpp=32" to the lilo.conf

But no change, i also commented out the timeout before auto boot. But there was still a 01:58 timeout on the lilo screen.
So i guess that the changes in lilo.conf is not in effect.

Nope.

I tried lilo and i got this:

Duplicate entry 'append' at at or abot line 40 in file '/etc/lilo.conf'
There is already a append line there, with the following content:

append=" vt.default_utf8=0"
How do i add "video=viafb:viafbmode=1280x1024,viafb_bpp=32" to the other append line ?

Put in a space after the 0 and add the extra content. The entire line should look like:

append=" vt.default_utf8=0 video=viafb:viafbmode=1280x1024,viafb_bpp=32"
If that doesn't work, try:

Code:
append=" vt.default_utf8=0 vga=normal"
