My USB ports are ghosts

The first few moments I boot slack I have access to the usb ports. Then after some time they vanish and I lose the printer and the ipod/mem key. When I type lsusb there is only one port listed with noting connected.

There are 3 usb ports, 2 back, 1 front. All have something connected when I test then (printer, ipod, mem key) and here is the result:
Code:
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Any idea what makes them disappear and how I can anchor them so they don't go away?

This sounds a bit like a problem that I have with a system with a USB optical mouse. After a period of time with no mouse activity, the mouse goes to sleep. The best method of recovery that I have found to date is to re-run the rc.hotplug script i.e. as root, type /etc/rc.d/rc.hotplug restart
The mouse then wakes up and all is OK.

I have yet to determine the cause of this problem, but I suspect that it is hardware related. I recently had a problem on a Windows XP box that was caused by a power management setting on an internal network card that was allowing the computer to turn off the network card when not in use. Unfortunately this was also turning off a proprietary PCI card that was using the same interrupt. I noted that this interrupt was also being shared with a USB hub.

This may be a clue or a total red herring!

After a couple of reboot from solving other problems, the front usb port is working. For now. And lsusb show my mem key. The strange thing though is that lsusb only shows 1 port when they are empty and 2 when the mem key is plugged when it should list all Bus/Device/ID. 'lsusb -v' gives the same result. So far the printer is doesn't show.
I tested the back port, there are 3 not 2, with my usb key. On 2 the key light doesn't lit and lsusb remains mute. The third one works. The printer though is still missing on all port.

Here is my .config
Code:
CONFIG_USB_ARCH_HAS_HCD=y
CONFIG_USB_ARCH_HAS_OHCI=y
CONFIG_USB=y
# Miscellaneous USB options
#
CONFIG_USB_DEVICEFS=y
# USB Host Controller Drivers
#
CONFIG_USB_EHCI_HCD=y
CONFIG_USB_UHCI_HCD=y
CONFIG_USB_PRINTER=y
CONFIG_USB_STORAGE=y

# USB Input Devices
#
CONFIG_USB_HID=y
CONFIG_USB_HIDINPUT=y

# USB Multimedia devices
#
CONFIG_USB_PWC=m

I suggest that you concentrate on getting the USB printer operating correctly. Then your other problems may go away.
Does your printer manufacturer supply a Linux driver?

Finally the problem was fairly stupid (as it always seems to be..). For the millionth time I did lspci -v to check something I might have miss while configuring the kernel and there it was: the usb is OHCI and the kernel was set to UHCI.
It took 3 month to figure out something like that. I'm [start sarcasm] proud of myself [stop sarcasm].

Worst of all I can even see it in the config I put on this thread..
