My journey to becoming a Slacker

Hi all,

I figured that i would register here now that i am becoming more familiar with Slackware.
About 2 months ago a co-worker had a problem with his notebook. I usually fix computers (the windows type), everything from changing lcd screens, to troubleshooting windows. But his notebook had Ubuntu on it. I believe it was intrepid. working with computers as a hobby for the last 15 years I knew of Linux from the old days when it was not so user friendly. I figured that i would dual boot one of my notebooks with Ubuntu so that I could help him better.

I installed Jaunty as a dual boot with my existing Vista install on a Toshiba A305D. Worked like a charm. That is how I got my feet wet. After running that setup for a week or so, I wiped the computer for Ubuntu only. I was impressed! it was faster and more stable than Vista. But after a fair bit of exposure to Linux i decided that i wanted something far more extensive, hence Slackware. I stumbled upon http://www.howtoforge.com/the_perfec...op_slackware12. I figured that i could just replace Slackware 12 with Slackware 13, and off I went. The only issue with the Toshiba A305D was that it would only use the Vesa driver, no too big of a deal. i dont really play games, but the window compositor in xfce had to remain disabled.

BTW.... xfce rocks!

To make a long story short, it took about 2 months to find the setup that i wanted in Slackware. I have since returned the original notebook that i used to Vista and gave it to my kids (LOL), and bought a new Sony Vaio VGN-FW460J to run Slackware on. There were more issues with the Vaio than the Toshiba ie... the headphone jack issue with the realtek cards( fixed with the hippo option), and the wireless is acting funny under wicd 1.6.2.1 and intel wireless.

Thanks for your time.

Hello and Welcome to LQ! I don't claim to be an expert on the subject but of the distros I've tried, I've had the most success with Slackware on my laptops. Maybe it's just that I feel more comfortable with Slack or simply that I am a Slacker...

That hits the nail on the head. Like I said in another thread, Slackware seems to give me more incentive to learn and experiment than other distros I've tried.
Nearly forgot: Welcome, TOTALZERO!

Thanks for the warm welcome. I think i got the wifi issue knocked. I think it was a simple matter of changing the chanel from 6 to 8 on the router. It seems to be working fine now.

I couldn't have said it better. Every step has been a learning experience and i get more comfortable tooling around Slackware everyday. Does anyone know of a book or .pdf i can aquire that goes more in-depth with the commands and file structure?

I think an essential read is the rute book. It's free online and you can download a copy. It's not Slackware specific but Linux in general and full of useful information.
