My computer has lost its voice!!! (aka: sound not working)

Hello:

Today, the sound on my computer stopped working.

I do not know if this has anything to do with it but this morning I did:
Quote:

# slackpkg update
# slackpkg install-new
# slackpkg upgrade-all
I think that the only program updated was 'flash'.

Also, although I do not see it now, there was a 'notification' sometime today that read:
Quote:

Phonon: KDE's Multimedia Library
The audio playback device HDA Intel (AD 198x Analog) does not work.
There is no sound for YouTube videos when played in Chromium and the volume controls on my laptop do nothing at all.

Any suggestions would be appreciated,

Try switching KDE's backend to Phonon-mplayer

Does 'speaker-test' produce noise?

Adam

Yes and this output:
Code:

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 1 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 2048 to 8192
Period size range from 1024 to 1024
Using max buffer size 8192
Periods = 4
was set period_size = 1024
was set buffer_size = 8192
 0 - Front Left
Time per period = 2.834769

How do I stop it!

Hello:

I found out something interesting:

If I reboot and login as 'root', all sound things work!

If I reboot and login as 'rob', all sound things DO NOT work!

adamk75 02-22-2011 06:33 PM

Is 'rob' a member of the audio group?

Adam

Hi Adam:

That's it!

'rob' wasn't but is now.

Thanks,
