My cd rom is not bootable anymore?
Hello all.
Well, about every two or 3 yerars I'll play with linux for a while.
I thought I try slackware this time.
I downloaded 10.2 iso and they checked fine with no errors.
I'm installing it on an old PII 550 mhz with a 20 gig hard drive and 320megs of ram....The cd rom was bootable when I started, but after having a bad install like half of the packages were getting errors and X din't install I started over. Now, my cd rom is not bootable anymore. I don't mean the media, I mean my toshiba cdrom. I have it set in the bios to boot up, but it now say's boot faliure now matter what disk I have in it albeit windows xp or linux and I tried like 6 different ones and two different cd roms ( actually, some were dvd drivs ). I'm tired now, but tomorrow, I'll reset the bios.
Dose anyone know what might case this? I always have trouble with floppys, but never with cd/dvd roms but guess I do now...
Mitch.

It sounds like your drive has died, but i would change the cable to eliminate that and also test the bootable cd-rom in a different drive? Failing that, if posssible change the drive and try again. Do you see the drive on the bios screen?

Thanks for the reply.
I had did all that and tried 3 different drives. The bootup cd works fine in my othere pc's..
Well, I reset the bios this morning and it seems to be installing now. This time, I hope it installs the xwindows thing this time.
As I said in my post, I mess with linux on and off. I wanted to try Slackware to make me learn how to config this instead of having the OS do it for you.
Just having problems finding the best sites to go to that explains things logically, or so that I can understand them..
I'm ver rusty on the command line, but I'll get that back...
I'll keep you posted on the install.. So far I'm not getting the errors this time like I did the fist time it istalled...
Thanks for the reply...

These forums contain a wealth of knowledge to the Linux beginner, use search that would be the best advice, people fail to do this and start a new thread when they don't have to.
http://www.slackbook.org/html/index.html
http://www.linuxpackages.net/ is an excellent site for packages.
http://www.computerhope.com/unix.htm for cli help.
Also remember to back-up anything you work on, before you start changing things. I give them a .orig so i can quickly identify it.

SLW 10 help
For a great source on SW10 install and config try dl'ing SimplyLinux book by jetzblack. It is free and covers install/config of several oses and of desktops. Linuxpackages has an online SW book and older install/config articles. Happy Slacking.

Hey, thanks again guys...
Well, I do have plenty of books on Linux, just nothing to new.
The last time I messed with it I was using Fedora 1, which I did get running well...
I did finally did get a good install, but after starting x, my optical mouse did not work, so I had to reset the pc and I must have corrupted the install, because I could not get it to boot with out error..
I'm installing once again and switched the mouse to a ball type...
We'll see...
I book marked the web sites you guys mentioned. I really should have read more before trying to install, but I like to learn as I go...
And that is what I hear about Slackware, if you want to learn Linux, use Slacware..
I have to learn how to use vi or some text editor again...
Ok, I just got it installed once again...Lets see..
Ok, I'm in windows and the mouse is working..Guess what, the sound is working as well...
Thaks again guys..
I'll be back, I'm sure...

How to get on internet with Slackware 10.2
Ok, I have slackware booting up to x now..
I have two computers hooked up to a linksys router. One pc being windows xp and the other of course, this Slackware..
I set up Xp with static ip.. I want to do the same with slackware.
I edited rc.inet1.conf file to set a static ip on slackware, or tried to..Still can't get on the internet, though I can ping my xp pc form Slackware and Slackware from xp and they both see each other.
What am I missing here? I'm reading the info on how to do this, but it does not work...
I'm sure I'm missing something and that is why I'm posting...
Thanks...
Mitch
