Mutt & Spanish in Slackware

Hello all,

I hope you can help me with this subject:

I'm using mutt for sending and receiving email, the thing is that I'm a spanish speaker and my mails appears with a ? instead of áéíóúñ

I made all settings I know in order to have slackware in spanish :study:

/etc/profile with
LANGUAGE=es_ES
LANG=es_ES
LC_ALL=es_ES

but it doesn't work. :confused:

Can somebody help me?

Thanks in advance.

Hello, this issue happened to me with some internet providers, because the mail server can't work with spanish speacial characters and changes them with ? or others ascii symbols, then maybe isn't a mutt problem. Try changing your mail server with one you known can work with spanish characters.
hope help you.

I agree, I think it's not a mutt problem...

I'm using slackware 9.0 (Full installation) in a average machine (AMD 800Mhz, Ram=128Mb, etc) without problems between mutt and "áéíóúñ" characters, but the problem appear in my other machine (Pentium 300Mhx, Ram=64Mb, etc) with slackware 9.0 only in console mode. I'm using the same mail server with both machines.

For this reason it could be a linux setup problem.

What do you think?

Thanks...

mutt & spanish

think if in console mode you can write spanish characters it could be mutt setup issue, and don't know where select charset in mutt, but if neither can write spanish character in console mode with command to make files for examples then it's a system setup issue. I supose you know that just i've wrote, so for general setup there is a "spanish-howto" than can help you to solve problem with characters in console mode but about mutt really don't know how this soft is configured.
hope that help you :)

Thanks davinci

Well, I can write spanish characters in console mode when I am in mutt (i.e. Subject: cañón, Pérez), but when I get the mail it appear as cañ?n, P?rez.

I was wondering if the NLS could be the origin of the problem, I use to have mutt in Linux RedHat with no problems with NLS, but in Slackware 9.0 it made me an headache, I could not set mutt in spanish and I'm using mutt in english.

Summarizing, the question now would be: how to correctly form mutt with support for NLS in Slackware 9.0. ... don't you think so?

Thanks again.
