Are there any cool visual effect apps out you guys are aware of?

I'm using Sonata + mpd here, but would like to have some visuals using an external program.

Sure! With Amarok, if you installed libvisual, and libvisual plugins, you get visualisations for your music.
If you also install Project M (package name: projectm) you get hundreds of other visualisations when you enable the visualisation projectm. To step forwards and backwards use "n" and "p" for Next and Previous.

I'm a big fan of mpd too. If there are any standalone music visualisation programs that can be used to monitor the alsa mixer/dsp directly rather than plugins for the program feeding the sound to the dsp then I'd be interested in knowing of them too.
