Music but no sound effects in Runescape

Hey guys,

Forgive me in advance if this isn't the appropriate place to ask this question.

I am using Slack 12.2 with most the most recent stable version of Firefox and I like to play Runescape. The music plays just fine but I can't hear any of the sound effects during gameplay.

I have the JRE package installed and I chose "Sun Java" from the dropdown box (which is the default selection) but still no sound effects.

I should also mention that I have the Intel AC97 on-board sound card and it seems to work fine for me with every other application including flash games so I am assuming this might be related to Java.

ALSA is running but I do have the OSS compatability modules disabled and they are not compiled into my kernel at all (don't know if this matters but worth mentioning).

The game plays fine in every other respect, but it would be nice to hear the sound effects.

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this would be much appreciated as I hate Java and consequently I know very little about it.

Looking at the Runescape forums suggests that sound is problematic with Runescape running under linux, perhaps there is something on those forums that may help.

Been there done that

I appreciate the reply but that's only telling me that others have had or are having similar problems playing Runescape under linux.

I saw no official support documentation from Jagex, but please feel free to point out a specific link if you know of one. Personally, I found nothing on the Runescape forums to help me troubleshoot this problem.

Hi folks!
I had issues with sound in Runescape (Ubuntu Karmic, btw), and it's a 2-part problem.

First, use the icedtea6-plugin package (apt-get install icedtea6-plugin) for your java. You might need to uninstall any sun or gcj java versions you have installed: just do a search for plugin in synaptic, basically, and filter the ones you have installed to the top of the list. This adds pulseaudio support to java: without that, either runescape grabs your audio card, or if something else has it you get no sound at all. Icedtea being the open java implementation which plays nice with everything else.

Second: sometimes I get music but no sound effects. The only way I've found around that is to log out, shut down firefox completely, make sure there's no firefox or jvm processes still running (htop is very useful for that part) and fire it up again. Usually only takes 2 tries: 2 chop-and-start-again cycles is the most I've ever needed. A bit of a pain, I know, but it gets me there!

Not Only But Also...

Update!! ;)
Found a totem-player-plugin (or something like that) in htop as well, killed it, fixed it......

And again!! lol

Lost the effects half-way through a game: went into edit-prefs-applications, changed everything with totem mentioned into "Always ask" instead, and it looks good. Watch this space......

Curiouser and curiouser!

I'm still getting the sound effects, but not the music, dropping out - they're there when I log in, but after 5 minutes or so, kaput!
Opening up the Pulseaudio Volume Control, and looking at the Playback tab, I can see a "Java: Audio Stream" with a level meter for the music, working fine, and another "Java: Audio Stream" which appears for a second (no levels on the meter) and then vanishes, which looks to me like the effects are trying to start but crashing for some reason.
Why would it not work? Permissions? If so, why would it work at all? Isn't this a cracker of a problem? Is anyone actually reading this? Lol ;)
No idea if this helps: I'm off now on a search-and-rescue log files mission but any and all suggestions would be gratefully received.

This might help

It's been a while since I posted this thread but I wanted to update everyone in the event this information may help someone. I discovered that the loss of sound effects was due to not having the OSS compatability modules loaded.

I intentionally disabled them thinking that no modern application would need them but I was wrong. I enabled the OSS compatability modules for ALSA in my kernel recompiled it, and I was good to go.

I hope this helps someone.

Obviously you didn't read the post before you starting mouthing off. I said the music was working fine but there were no sound effects which includes magic, range, slash etc.

Ive tried everything suggested still no sound effects

yesterday I managed to get sound effects and music playing on Runescape briefly until I logged out. After that I can't get it to do it again. I have tried all these remedies suggested - even though I didn't use any of them when I did it the first time- I dont know what it was that i did that made it work. Only time I touched terminal before was to install java from java.com I tried the padsp command and it does nothing, tried the bit of code rerouting java on another post and had to reinstall my java and browser. It must be in the settings Im sure it is but I dont know enough about the intricasies of linux to know which it is.

This problem isn't solved at all for me. It was the update that destroyed my sound effects. Specifically the 10.10(64) update after installing from iso , did it change something? Can anyone just tell me how to get these sound effects working?
