Multiple problems...
 

Ok i have a few problems.

1. My nvidia-settings aren't run by default, is there a way to do this?

2. This just randomly happens:

Waitinf for X server to shut down Gecko: Fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server :0.0.

3. When i try to start amsn this happens:

Application initialization failed: no display name and no $DISPLAY environment variable
Error in startup script: invalid command name "wm" while executing
"wm state . withdraw"
(file "./amsn" line 43)

Can anyone help me? (im in fluxbox, slack 10) Thx!!

What do you mean by your nvidia settings aren't run by default? If you mean you don't get the splash then lets see your xorg.conf file (just the part about your gfx card!).

Are you trying to run amsn while su'd in an xterm? If so, the reason that's happening is that when you su to root, none of your environment variables transfer over.

Hmm, alright. And for the nvidia-setting i mean everytime i start up i have to su as root and type "nvidia-settings" to get them back. (i have an ultra dark monitor and need more brightness.) Thx for the replies btw!

try add to your ~/.xinitrc :
nvidia-settings -l .nvidia-settings-rc

or see yourself :
nvidia-settings -h

out of curiosity, i have an old, somewhat burned-out monitor...what did you mean by that? i've got the brightness on the monitor cranked up all the way, same with the contrast, and it's still pretty dark. is there a way you know to do something about that?

Yes there is a way! lol. If u have the nvidia drivers installed, just type nvidia-settings and crank up ur gamma + brightness or wtv. If ur running KDE just go in settings and find the place where u can up the brightness (it does exist). (i'm running fluxbox, so..yeah.) Anyways, i 've got the same problem as u but its fixed now :D

hmm. i'm running slackware, fluxbox and the VESA drivers....but i have KDE installed, so maybe i'll fire it up and see if i can make the adjustments and then never have to touch it again!! mwuahahaha. might work. still, there must be a way to do this through some config file, maybe i'll look through xorg.conf for gamma. anyway, thanks for the info!
