Multiple harware problems in 11 not evident in 10

I have a compaq presario 1690 and slack 9 and 10 both reconized the fact that it was a laptop and its sound card with no problem, and minimum configuration. I just installed 11 yesterday and it does not see the sound card only the midi part of the card and does not want to turn on APM. How would I go about this. Keep in mind this is an old laptop (though well maintained) and just may be harware failure.

Also I have just purchased a cisco etherfast pcmcia nic card to replace my broken generic compusa brand (which worked perfectly) and slack asks me about which platform this card would work under, and presents me with a list of different distros. How should I go about getting this and my Netgear WG511 v2 to be recognized under Slack.
