i asked this before with no real luck for a solution.

i installed slackware a few weeks ago and im still pretty new to it so bare with me.

when i try to play mp3 files or whatever with amarok or xmms i get "skipping" with the audio. flash never really worked. it would freeze and get nothing but skipping audio. i have tried both flash 7 and 9 beta with both firefox and opera and i get the same result with all possible options.

i can use mplayer with no problems for both audio and video playback but i would like to use amarok for music/podcasts/ipod and vlc for video.

i am using fluxbox 1.0rc2, slackware 11, opera 9.02, firefox 2.0, and mplayer 1.0rc1.

hardware: pentium d 820, onboard intel audio using alsa, sata drive, and 512mb ram.

it was suggested in another forum that the problem may be with insufficient ram but i have gkrellm running all the time and it never gets really high and the swap is almost never even touched. plus i dont do a whole lot at one time and what i do use doesnt have a huge footprint.

my initial thought was that i dont have DMA enabled but i dont even know if it is possible/necessary with sata drives. when i try to enable it i get a message thats says i have an inappropriate i/o controller. im really at a loss though.

anyone have any ideas? thanks for any help.

I'm having the same problem (I posted it earlier, but got little help).

For me, audio works in Amarok from the start, but Flash audio continuously skips until I hide the video. Same thing with MPlayer, even after adding
echo 1024 > /proc/sys/dev/rtc/max-user-freq
to rc.local.

Interestingly, I didn't have this issue in Slackware 10.2. Back then, I used mplayer-plugin (not Flash) to play YouTube videos with no problems. This doesn't work for me in 11.

Anyone have some answers?

Note - using Linux, compiled myself.

well as far as I can think with respect to the sound, make sure you are using alsa as your sound driver and not oss. Play around with your amarok settings.

yeah i know my driver is alsa. not asure what else i could do with amarok to get it to work. i think im going to install a new kernel. this time ill do it with smp support... if it doesnt solve the problem it will at least optomize my system for the hardware im using.... if anyone has a better idea then im open for anything.

Is xine configured to use the same codecs as mPlayer does? do that and ask Amarok to use the Xine engine.
