You can get the developer or express versions for free, which could be helpful for someone wanting to learn and get the knowledge of it to make yourself more competitive for jobs. But it is true that if you want to run it in a business, you're looking at $3717 per core for standard or $14,256 per core for Enterprise.
@OP, I've never tried since, as Darth Vader, I am perfectly content with mariadb for my sql needs. However, if you really want to run it, you can
start with the helpful folks at AUR who have it working on Arch. With a bit of scripting knowledge, you should be able to easily transfer that to a SlackBuild and get a Slackware package for it.
