mplayerplug and mplayer subtitle font

Have two problems with mplayerplug/mplayer:

mplayerplug does nothing. it starts, loads the video and shows "stopped".
I can configure it, it shows controls and everything but it just wont
play anything.
mplayer itself works just fine.

Other thing with mplayer. I just cant get the subtitle font to my needs.
The OSD font works like i want.
The subtitles not. Whatever i do, it still shows that ugly fat outlined
standard font. I did everything mentioned in the faqs, howtos, manpages.
I even compiled it by myself with or without fontconfig to no avail.
Is it an mplayer bug or what do i miss?

mplayer-plugin is pretty old and doesn't really work right anymore on firefox (least last time I tried it). Try using gecko-mediaplayer or maybe gxine-plugin.

Also just to make sure, did you try making a proper symlink to a truetype font you want to use?

from Alien_Bob's slackbuilds...

gecko-mediaplayer: added v0.9.8 - Gecko Media Player is a browser plugin that
uses GNOME MPlayer to play media in a gecko-based browser (like firefox). It
replaces mplayerplug-in from the same author.
gnome-mplayer: added v0.9.8 - GNOME MPlayer is a GTK GUI for MPlayer. Don't be
fooled by the gnome: this package does not depend on any gnome library, it
only follows the Gnome Human Interface Guidelines.

You can get his packages from here http://connie.slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/

You may also want to try mediaplayerconnectivty, a Firefox add-on. Works just fine with MPlayer (you do not need or want mplayerplug-in).

This is what amiga32 means, in a bit more detail:
