I am new to linux and running slack 9. I have tried installing mplayer from source but it fails when I try "make" after running "./configure"
It finds my libs and all that, but tells me to check my /proc/mtrr in the documentation section. When I check that I find them to be OK I think (but the documentation is terrible).
So I tried to install using "installpkg" but it just says:
"Description: "
And the rest is blank. A few seconds later it just returns to prompt without doing anything.
Ok it says after ./configure:
"Please check mtrr settings at /proc/mtrr (see DOCS/en/video.html#mtrr)"
After trying "make":
############################################################
####### Please run ./configure again - it's changed! #######
############################################################
make: *** [config.h] Error 1
If I am using "installpkg" I get:
root@darkstar:/home/buyo/rob# installpkg mplayer-0.91-i686-1rob.tgz
Installing package mplayer-0.91-i686-1rob...
PACKAGE DESCRIPTION:
root@darkstar:/home/buyo/rob#
There are only about two seconds before i am returned to the prompt. There are also a bunch of messages in the configure.log but I am not sure which specific one might be related to my problem.
I am using that exact package, but when i run:
installpkg mplayer-0.91-rob etc.
it just returns me to prompt after a few seconds.
The cvs also returns the same error as the normal source build.
Well, MPlayer isn't that huge, so, being
returned to the prompt after a few seconds
should be considered normal. Did you look
at the /var/log/packages directory to see
whether it has actually been installed?
Also, did you try to RUN it after being returned? :)
On using the source/cvs to install mplayer it turns out that I needed to set my system clock (I found this out after I gave up on mplayer and tried to install xine, thankfully it gave me a more descriptive error message than "Error 1"). The bad news is now I have another compile problem.
i found mplayer in /var/log/packages and mplayer is listed. I still get command not found when I try to use it tho. I ran "ldconfig" which I thought updated the right thing (sorry don't know the terminology here for telling the system about any new executables). I tried another slackware package (gkrellm) and again it just said "description:" and then returned me to the prompt after about two seconds, then gkrellm was also listed in /var/log/packages, but also would not run.
Man my first three days with slackware are killing me.
Hmmm, I found the CVS install to be fairly painless. The documentation was decent also. I had MPlayer running on a bare.i kernel (slack 9) with no issues at all.
As for gkrellm, did you perchance install to a dir not in your path? If you do a whereis gkrellm does it list it? If so, did you try typing the full path to it? (ie /some/wied/dir/gkrellm &).
Dont give up on slack! These little obstacles help us get that knowledge base built up! Ive been using RH for a couple years, and ill be the first to say that Slack has really put the thinking back into Linux for me. I love the challange! So dont give up! =)
Well I wanted to thank everyone for their help on my various issues. Last night I was able to get the xine slack package to install without a hitch. Mplayer and gkrellm packages still dont work, but I was also able to get Gkrellm installed form source. I have to agree with Nowell and say that in the five days that I have used slack I am becoming a more savvy linux user. It is bothersome that all these packages don't work, but it's an issue that I may explore in another forum sometime.
