Mplayer plugin causes Firefox to crash

I have recently switched my laptop to Slack 12.2. Everything seems to be working except mplayer plugin causing firefox to crash. It seems to happen if I decide to quit before the video finishes or if the video type is not supported. I searched the forum for answers and found several java related, but nothing about mplayer-plugin.

Thanks for any help.

Dan
[edit:] a new search found some related posts, but for older versions [/edit:]

[edit:] this is the error I get if I start firefox from a terminal:
/usr/lib/firefox-3.0.4/crashreporter: error while loading shared libraries: libgconf-2.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
/usr/lib/firefox-3.0.4/run-mozilla.sh: line 131: 16366 Segmentation fault "$prog" ${1+"$@"} [/edit:]

You might try gecko-mediaplayer instead. I never had trouble with crashes, but recently I found the mplayer plugin to be wanting and read that it's not really maintained anymore. Apart from the fact that it depends on gnome-mplayer(and consequently some gnome bits) and not simply mplayer, I'm finding gecko mediaplayer quite satisfactory. It plays the videos I couldn't get the mplayer plugin to play at least.

The VLC plugin might be another alternative.

Sounds like it requires a few extra libraries. Gconfig - which requires ORBIT2, both at www.slackbuilds.org. Or you could use the kaffeine plugin, which uses the included in Slackware by default Xine back end.

If you install the libs and it still crashes, I would try media player connectivity extension for FF. It has never crashed for me. Plugins tend to crash more.

Hello,

According to the README of the mplayerplug-in package on http://slackbuilds.org/:

Quote:
NOTE: You must have SeaMonkey (from Slackware) installed in order
for this package to build.
So do you have SeaMonkey installed?

If it still doesn't work, which version of the plug-in did you install, how (compile, Slacbuild,...)?

Thanks for that. Sounds like the best solution to me.

Thanks for the responses. I have Seamonkey installed. I tried installing the lib from Slackbuilds. Orbit2 worked fine but the link to gconf appears to be broken, it takes me to a blnk page.

Hello Dannyl,

Here's the GConf slackbuild page:

http://slackbuilds.org/repository/12.2/libraries/GConf/

It works fine for me now.

Also I could download the source file:

ftp://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/source...-2.9.91.tar.gz

Maybe you tried during a downtime period of the server.

Try again.

Hi to all. Thank you each for your responses. It appears to be working now that I have ORBit2 and Gconf installed.
