I just installed the mplayer codecs, mplayer and mplayer plugins in that order using pkgtool. I want Firefox to use mplayer when I go to sites with Quicktime video. So far I haven't got mplayer to do anything.
Still no luck, when I try to view quicktime in the browser the mplayer plug in logo comes up and I watch the progress bar go to 100% but then nothing happens.
I installed Ubuntu last week on another system and did the same thing: installed codecs then mplayer then plugin and it works perfectly.
I have searched and read and uninstalled and reinstalled and I am gettting nowhere.
Can anyone point me in the direction I need to go? Can anyone help?
Did you install mplayer & plugin by building yourself or is it some prepkg? It often helps if you manage your own installation. I only mention this as I've had some instances where a pre-built pkg caused issues.
If you use adblock with Firefox, try disabling it and then viewing the videos again. For reasons unknown to me, adblock often prevents the mplayer plugin from functioning properly. Hopefully that will be corrected in the near future, but until then, that seems to be the only way to correct it. I don't know that this is your problem, but it worked for me.

What do I need to do for this to work?
Try extracting the CODECS manually into /usr/lib/codecs -- you can get the essential codec pack right off mplayerhq.hu
It may be a good idea to compile MPlayer from source instead of using a package, this way you're not bound to someone elses configuration (ie whoever built the package). Good luck.
Ensure that mplayer will play the quicktime movie first, before
you try the plugin:
Download the movie to your home dir,
open a shell and enter:
$ mplayer quicktime-movie.mvi
(or whatever the movie is called)
If you have successfully installed mplayer in the first place,
a window will open and play the movie. If not, you should see
a description of what's wrong in the output. Try posting the
output if you still don't get it.
If you're still having trouble, try using this custom MPlayer package I built a while back. It has all of the Win32, Quicktime, and RealPlayer codecs included with it. Here is the URL:
I've managed to add quictime support for mplayer and install a plugin for firefox. The thing is really simple. First you have to install mplayer from source. Follow this instructions: http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/README and download this codecs: http://www1.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/rel...050412.tar.bz2 (that are all codecs avaliable on mplayer.hu). When you have successfully installed mplayer go on this site: http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/linux.html. And select mplayerplugin. Follow the instructions for compilation from the mplayerplug-in home page. When you have successfully compiled the plugin you have to copy ALL *.so files to firefox plugins folder and ALL .xpt files to firefox components folder, not just mplayerplug-in.so and mplayerplug-in.xpt. Mplayerplug-in creates *.so and *.xpt files in ./mplayerpluginfolder/${moz_libdir}.
