The entire error message is this:
Code:
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cl.exe... no
configure: error: in `/tmp/SBo/gnome-mplayer-0.9.8':
configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH
The config script can't find a compatible compiler to use. You need to install gcc first, and ensure that it's configured properly so that it's location is in your PATH variable.

I found this on SlackBuild. Is it appropriate?

Code:
http://www.slackbuilds.org/repository/13.0/development/gc/

It appears you have not installed Slackware's development packages (the packages in the "d" series, like gcc).
If you don't know Slackware well, better start with a full installation.

What you pointed to was not a SlackBuild for gcc. On slackbuilds.org you will only find scripts for software which is not part of Slackware.
Just install Slackware in full.

No this has nothing to do with your error. You just need the gcc C compiler and tools which are in the 'D' package tools set (development) on the installation disk. You should always install the development tools for any machine you may be building on. If you haven't (and it looks like you haven't) just go back and reinstall them.

Edit: Apologies - I left my input window open while Alien Bob was posting so I missed his prior posts and duplicated the information.

Yes, I remember not selecting it during the install process. So is this a rebuild or can you show me how to install this from the CD.?

Well you can start by adding the package set D to you existing build - hopefully you haven't left too much else out! It's really best, when starting out (I would even say always), to do a full install.
Pop in your install DVD and run this :
Code:
mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
su -c "installpkg /mnt/cdrom/slackware/d/*.txz"
and all the development package series will be added.

I always think there is a way to get pkgtool to install entire package series but I can never get it working so the above will work.

I mounted the CDROM thus

Code:
root@zorro:/home/siawacsh# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/root 83G 5.4G 73G 7% /
/dev/sdb3 9.2G 992M 7.8G 12% /home
/dev/sda1 200M 29M 172M 15% /fat-c
/dev/sda2 233G 46G 188G 20% /fat-d
tmpfs 3.0G 0 3.0G 0% /dev/shm
/dev/sdc1 294G 179G 100G 65% /home/siawacsh/myhome
/dev/sr0 3.7G 3.7G 0 100% /media/SlackDVD
/dev/sr0 3.7G 3.7G 0 100% /mnt/cdrom
root@zorro:/home/siawacsh#
But the install does not seem to wrok

Code:
root@zorro:/home/siawacsh# installpkg /mnt/cdrom/slackware/d/*.txz
Cannot install /mnt/cdrom/slackware/d/*.txz: file not found
root@zorro:/home/siawacsh# "installpkg /mnt/cdrom/slackware/d/*.txz"
bash: installpkg /mnt/cdrom/slackware/d/*.txz: No such file or directory
root@zorro:/home/siawacsh# installpkg /mnt/cdrom/slackware/d/*.txz
Cannot install /mnt/cdrom/slackware/d/*.txz: file not found

It looks like your Slackware DVD is mounted to /media/SlackDVD. So just try changing the install path to:
Code:
# installpkg /media/SlackDVD/slackware/d/*.txz
and see if that install command works.

It would also be wise to explore the content of your /media/SlackDVD/ before blindly attempting installpkg commands with wildcards.

Just looking at your /tmp dir it seems you have Slackware64 installed which will make it 'slackware64' in the path on the DVD and NOT 'slackware'

Well done.
For gnome-mplayer and gecko-mediaplayer you can find SlackBuild script and package here (by the way I just discovered that I have not yet published my builds for the 0.9.9 version (which is newer than the version you are trying to build):
ftp://ftp.slackware.org.uk/people/al...gnome-mplayer/
ftp://ftp.slackware.org.uk/people/al...o-mediaplayer/
