MPD no sound with dedicated user account

I have fully working MPD on under-the-table server running Slack 14.

However I got it working only from my personal user account and I'd like to use separate account just for mpd. With designated mpd user there is no sound and no error indicating what's wrong (it would complain about permission denied to /dev/dsp).

I believe permissions (group memberships) are ok, but just to be sure...

My user
Code:
yenn : users wheel audio
mpd
Code:
mpd : mpd audio users
(Users group used to access music collection)

Only thing I can think of is external usb sound card and maybe user need special permission to use usb devices. But that's already mapped to /dev/dsp. Or isn't?

I'm uncertain of this since I've never used an usb sound card, but have you tried adding the mpd user to the plugdev group?

Tried that and it didn't helped. Although I would be surprised if it worked, because my user isn't in plugdev group either.

Problem was actually in configuration. I set user and group in mpd.conf to 'mpd' and I should have set only user. I'm still not sure why this configuration is correct and previous wasn't (it should do the same thing), but at least music playback is back

Below lies snippet of config, if anyone will run into same problem:
Code:
# This setting specifies the user that MPD will run as. MPD should never run as
# root and you may use this setting to make MPD change its user ID after
# initialization. This setting is disabled by default and MPD is run as the
# current user.
#
user "mpd"
#
# This setting specifies the group that MPD will run as. If not specified
# primary group of user specified with "user" setting will be used (if set).
# This is useful if MPD needs to be a member of group such as "audio" to
# have permission to use sound card.
#
#group "mpd" # leave this uncommented; it should work, but it won't

is it legitimate and allowed and can be done to make another user account set uid and gid to null 0 to make another root account with different name and possibly not damage the debian system creating and using that new account BenJoBoy Linux - Newbie 12 01-29-2006 10:02 AM
