Mp3 not supported by amarok in slackware 12

hi all,
I am using Slackware 12. All of a sudden today amarok refuses to play any mp3 files and it gives the following error

Quote:
Error Loading Media
No suitable demux plugin. This often means that the file format is not supported.
Xine also gives the same error

This happens only to mp3 files,
I think i am missing required libraries but i cannot figure out which.
it was working fine a couple of days back,
all the other players
mpg321, mplayer, are fine

I've seen this error too and solved it the same way. I can't believe how many people have mentioned this in various forums so I guess it's pretty common.

I'm not an expert on media players but the natural question comes to mind: Why does Amarok use the files in the .xine directory? It seems Amarok should have nothing to do with Xine.

Weird stuff man. Weird stuff.

Not all that weird, since AmaroK uses Xine's engine for playing music .
