Mozilla Firefox v 3.0.11 - Changes to Bookmarks disappear from session to session.
 

Tonight, suddenly, I can neither add nor remove Bookmarks in my Firefox browser. They are changed for the session but then when I reopen FF I'm back to this particular arrangement.

I have gone to my home folder as suggested and renamed places.sqlite , but what happens is that a back-up is made. Then I erase the original, restart FF, and when I check again I find a new places.sqlite has been created. I can't make it go away.

I read the Human Readable link in Woodman's post. A bit much for me at my humble level, and anyway it doesn't really solve my problem...I don't think.

The only significant change made tonight was following a guy's instructions (kejen) on the IRC Freenode channel ##Slackware. He had me run as root then move the new file created to /etc/X11/xorg.conf -- which was done in an effort to ultimately get my DRI working for a 3d game, which it did.

Anyway, whether related or not, I now have a Firefox that won't save changes to Bookmarks (additive or subtractive) and a game that still doesn't work and keeps crashing X. *sigh*

looks like a problem with some permissions. Are you sure, that you have write-permissions in the directory where the firefox-profiles are stored? i.e. ~/.mozilla/firefox.
When you renamed somethings in your home-directory, have you done this with root-permissions?.

I thought it was permissions as well, but the folder .mozilla/firefox has me (Dennis) as the owner. I then went recursively through all of its contents and again, I am owner in all cases.

Not sure what went wrong to cause this problem, but anyway....

...in the end I backed up my Bookmarks from the FF toolbar's Bookmarks>Organize Bookmarks>Backup option, saved the file to desktop, shut down FF, opened a console and entered "firefox -profilemanager" and created a new profile. When I saw that this profile was without issue I went again to the FF toolbar's Bookmarks>Organize Bookmarks>Restore and navigated to the file I'd just saved to desktop.

Problem solved. Thanks to Digit on IRC Freenode ##Slackware for the walk-through. Hope someone finds this thread useful.
