Mounting NFS

Hey all,

I've got a box that's in our hosts site, they maintain all the boxes except this one I just put up. They have a nfs snap device that does our backups and such. I need to get that mounted and they are not able to provide me much help. On their boxes this is the line in fstab to mount it

Code:

snap          /mnt/share              nfs     defaults        0 0

if I do this: (I have created /mnt/share locally)

Code:

root@dev:/mnt# mount -t nfs snap /mnt/share
mount: directory to mount not in host:dir format

root@dev:/mnt# mount -t nfs xxx.xx.x.xx /mnt/share
mount: directory to mount not in host:dir format

or I've tried this as well

Code:

root@dev:/mnt# mount -t auto snap /mnt/share
mount: special device snap does not exist

root@dev:/mnt# mount -t auto xxx.xx.x.xx /mnt/share
mount: special device xxx.xx.x.xx does not exist

also, the device is visable to me, I can ping it

Hello,

you are trying to mount a complete servers filesystem.
This is not possible.
Check /etc/exports for the exported directorys.

Change snap in your fstab to snap:/directory/to/mount

that's their fstab, and it works perfectly there.......on one of there servers there is nothing in /etc/exports

Chapters 3 and 4 of the nfs howto is where you need to be and its pretty simple reading, http://nfs.sourceforge.net/nfs-howto/

on the server you need to have edited /etc/hosts.allow etc/hosts/deny these files say who gets access and who don't. You need to edit /etc/exports to declare what directory(ies) get exported under what conditions and finaly you need the line in /etc/fstab on the client side

It's not tha difficult and the howto chapters are short. Also make sure that /etc/rc.d/rc.nfsd and /etc/rc.portmao are running too.
