Mount problems

Why does everything in Slack have to be a chore, more problems.
Thought I had set up fstab so that I could mount both the DVD drive on hdd and the usb cd-rewiter on sr0.

DVD can play, with sound, cdroms but cannnot mount DVD's. This includes DVD's and DVD Roms. Error message appears saying...
Could not mount device.
The reported error was:
mount: mount point /mnt/dvd does not exist

Second problem, I can see the CD in the USB cdrewriter and right click gives the option to play the CD. CD plays but with no sound.

contents of fstab

Code:
/dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/hda1 / reiserfs defaults 1 1
/dev/hda3 /home reiserfs defaults 1 2
/dev/hdd /mnt/dvd auto noauto,user,ro 0 0
/dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,user,ro 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,owner 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
permissions for cdrom, dvd, hdd, sr0.

Code:
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 8 2006-09-23 02:26 cdrom -> /dev/hdd

lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 8 2006-09-23 02:26 dvd -> /dev/hdd

brw-rw-r-- 1 root disk 22, 64 2002-06-09 20:27 hdd

brw-rw-r-- 1 root cdrom 11, 0 1999-04-13 05:24 sr0
Perhaps someone could suggest what is wrong with the above configuration.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe the error is right and /mnt/dvd does not exist?

okay then, thats it then

Why doesn't it exist, how can I modify fstab so it does exist.

Another thing is that I have not tried burning a cd on the usb rewriter yet.

fstab ist just a simple config file, it doesn't check if an mount point exist. Just create /mnt/dvd and you are fine.

No, anywhere, "mkdir -p /mnt/dvd" doesn't care where you are when you run it.

You don't need to mount a DVD in order to play the movie contained on it. Do you get errors when starting Xine or another movie player?

Eric

PS: if you do not know what "mkdir -p" command does, and also did't look it up, then perhaps Slackware is not the perfect choice for you?

You know I have had some carry on trying to make Slackware work when previously I have had no problems with installing various versions of Mandrake/Mandriva. Why all the difficulties. I would love to be able to run Slackware and have everything going. I am sure that there would be uproar if this happened with windows. Why not make things automatic like Mandriva. Mandrivas downside for me is the support which you have to pay for. Then again I never needed much support as everything worked out of the box so to speak. I dont mind having to tweek a few things, but not everything.

Now does anyone have the slightest incline why I can mount dvdrom's with data on but not dvd movies. This is not a DRM issue. DVD is prior to that era. It would play in mandriva. When I try to mount it hangs as does Xine when I try to play.

Why does Kscd play the music cd in the DVD drive with sound and play withoput sound in the usb cdrewriter drive.

Anybody.

I dont want to re-install Mandriva. But every corner I turn I hit problems. Scared to try to install FreeRock Gnome.

I did look it up after I posted, jumped in to soon.

Insert DVD ... nothing happens automatically.

Open Noatun ... doesnot play ...go file open then storeage media and click on DVD, mount dialog opens...then after a period ... this error message appears in dialog box
Quote:
Could not mount device.
The reported error was:
mount: No medium found

Open gxine - first time - doesnot play DVD automatically - File - DVD - and then nothing - the dvd light flickers and PC periodically hangs. Been waiting a good couple of minutes, still hanging. Wont close, finally this message appears...

Quote:
Window with title "gxine 0.4.8" is not responding. This window belongs to application gxine (PID=1598, hostname=localhost).
Do you wish to terminate this application? (All unsaved data in this application will be lost.)
PC still running slow and hanging. Cant eject DVD.
