More Gnome Libraries Required for Firefox 3

It seems from what I have read on various forums that to properly compile and build Firefox 3.0 on Slackware, additional Gnome libraries are required and I feel that the issue is important enough to highlight in a new thread to make sure it is picked up by those concerned with Slackware.

This thread has more or less proven this issue:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...845/page2.html

This dependency is probably an explanation for the appearance of 'Gtk-CRITICAL ....' errors observed by myself and others on shutdown of KDE. See this thread:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...845/page2.html

I've seen no reference to the requirement of these libraries in any Mozilla site build information.

edit: Just seen the bug report https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=409192
Bill.

I'm hoping that Mozilla will fix these issues in the future releases. Either way, at least some of the issues can be worked around without the need to compile anything.

I'm definitely not going to install a bunch of GNOME libs just for Firefox. If it eventually comes to the point where Firefox is no longer usable otherwise, I'd say it time to fork.

Is seamonkey going down the gnome route?

I think/hope that seamonkey will still hold the line for quitr some time. It can still be compiled for just GTK-1.2 -this is porbably due to the desire to maintain compatibility with AIX and other such UNIX OS's.

Anybody wanna help revive the dillo browser? I've been slowly working on getting it patched up to work with GTK2(from an old patch), even though I still run a pure GTK-1.2 installation.

Seems like it's going to be fixed then...

I'd really love to help out with dillo, but I have zero C coding skills. I'd be happy to help with bug testing or anything else you have in mind. I think dillo's a great browser, and often use it over ssh.

FF3 does not require Gnome libs.

It requires a decent recent Gtk with Cairo, that's all.

Post Edited. I realised that I was just repeating my original post.

There are three different problems mentioned in this thread. The blank application panel requires a simple patch, the thundbird stuff is due to a lacking/wrong protocol handler and/or some RDF-stuff (the solution is posted in posting 25 from shadowsnipe) and the font stuff is a _totally_ gnome unrelated issue.

I have FF3 and I have no Gnome and I compiled FF3 myself with --disable-gnome-vfs and --disable-gnomeui.

It really runs without Gnome.

Yeah I was told that new FF will use gtk themes and that's all. No gnome required as far as I know.

Yes, it does obey Gtk themes.
