Is the monitor powering off or do you mean only a black screen? Is the power indicator on or off?

If the screen is only black but you have power, can you toggle to alternate consoles by pressing Alt-F2, Alt-F3, Alt-F4, etc?

If the screen is only black but you have power, try (blindly) typing xset dpms force on.

Do you use an xorg.conf file? Is there a directive Option "DPMS" "TRUE"? If yes, as a test, change that to false and try again.

Try typing the following before typing startx:

setterm -blank 0
xset s off
xset -dpms

Then type startx and then exit X. What happens?

Do you have some kind of laptop acpi scripts running that is being tricked into thinking that exiting X is the same as closing the laptop lid?
