I've just installed moneydance from slackbuilds and tried to run it - that's the message that appeared on the screen:

I felt a little bit like when you buy a computer with MS windows and try to run those hundreds of preinstalled trial versions of programs.
It's so not-linux... I mean I understand the meaning of the word 'free' in free software (not always in the financial sense) but still...

Is the application so good that Robby & co. decided to include it in the slackbuilds?

Rather than get into the politics, can I suggest instead that you use GnuCash. I know it has many dependencies but installing it using the queue function in sbopkg make this trivial.

Unfortunately I cannot give you a comparison of the two as I use Quicken2000 via wine, it still, in my opinion, has the best forward planning graph.

Yeah, I started with gnucash but got scared away by the dependencies.
I'm not criticising Robby's choice - it's his/their website and can even include MS office if he wants, it has just taken me by surprise to see something like that.

Politics aside, has anyone used it for a longer period of time to share their experience? It looks quite good with a clear layout.

I'm configuring grisbi at the moment looks promising as well. I had gnucash with 12.2 but as far as I remember it was an overkill for my needs.

To the best of my knowledge, there's no rule that slackbuilds submitted to slackbuilds.org should be limited to 'free as in beer' software only. Unlike GNU and the FSF, I don't believe slackbuilds.org have a political agenda, other than to provide quality build scripts for the convenience of slackers.

Only you can decide whether Moneydance is worth paying for (and I guess that's why they decided to give you the 100 transaction limited demo mode)

I've been using KMyMoney for a number of years now and have been pretty happy with it. I wish it would handle subaccounts better, but that's really my only gripe. That any they don't have a bona-fide KDE4 version yet . . .

I'm in samac's camp as I have tried everything & went back to quicken via Wine and then XP/VirtualBox.
My runner ups would be Gnucash & Homebank

Sadly, GNUCash is the only one that actually works the way I want it. Nobody's ledgers make sense except for quicken and GNUCash. Also very sadly is that all of them promote bad accounting practices by changing the names for credit and debit and also changing the sign value of the numbers so that they look like people expect them, rather than what they are! At least you can correct them.

I just wish I could remove the GConf dependency from GNUCash
