modules renamed after copy!!
I'm installing Slack8.1 on an old laptop with no cd or network connection. I.ve got everything but the kernel modules installed. Here is the problem: I copied the kernel module.tgz file from the disk onto my FreeBSD box untarred it and broke it into small pieces that fit on floppies. Problem is after I coied them, they are named differently!! Example : 2.4.18 became 24~1.18 apm.o.gz becomes apmo~1.gz etc. When I tried to rename them it would not do it!!! Any Ideas????

Hi joe83,
I don't know if "split" exists on bsd but is probable. This utility divides a file in pieces. Its default is to divide to the size of a floppy disk. To recompose the file again all you need is to cat the files. As the package is a tar file, after the recomposition you will have all the contents, filenames, etc of the original package. |
The files loses their name because of fat filesystema that only support files with 8 letters as name and 3 as extention. You could format the disquette to use ext2 or compress the files with long names and uncompress them on your old machine.
