module making
Making and inserting modules takes hours for my slow pcs. I'm rebuilding my kernel-2.6.10 with alsa support and am hoping to cut down on my module making time since I already have the modules is /lib/modules/2.6.10.
What happens after I make bzImage and then execute make modules- since I already have them where they would be built...would it delete that modules directory or add to it?

I've redone my config to add just 1 module - to my suprise, is MUCH faster then
compared to the first time.
Since the modules are already there, it recognizes that fact and moves on - as long
as you are using the same /usr/src/linux-xxxxx directory to build from, so it doesn't
have to recreate the contents of /lib/modules/<kernel_version/name>

excellent!!
ok, how about this-when I FINALLY get a kernel config that I'm happy with for the 2.6.x series (hopefully the second try with 2.6.10), I'll eventually upgrade to 2.6.12 (when it comes out). Will the same adding modules apply to that if I first copy the 2.6.10 modules to /lib/modules/2.6.12?

I'd like to hear a more knowledgeable persons opinion on the matter, but I
don't think so.
Unless there was no improvments/changes made on that particular module,
it might work, but I wouldn't do it. I would be affriad that I would end up with
a big mess on my hands. I'de keep individual modules working with the
kernel version that made them.
If it takes some time on your system, as like you said, they are on the slow side,
I'd type this:
make bzImage && make modules && make modules_install
and go to bed for the night.
I do it that way, and I am fortuante enough to have a relatively fast system.
