Mods request for sticky tips for slack

You are the bestest, kindest folk that inhabit this gentle planet.

umm, is it possible to have at the beginniing of slackers forum sticky posts such as the kernel one and maybe some slack tips and slack websites for us non-slackers who are thinking of coming out of the darkness and become better humans?

Yeah, I like that idea. The 'slack site/what should I read/where's this book?' threads. The 'all I see is # - what do i do?' threads. The 'fdisk? Oh $#!^!' threads. 'ALSA in Slack 9.1'. A few like that could be profitably stuck, I think. :)

I'm sure there's a general 'Thinking of switching to slack'-type thread somewhere pretty high up, though, aus9 - you can hop on one of those and ask your questions for now. And I know a 'slack websites' thread was just up.

It would be nice to have a couple of stickies for some of the more common questions about ALSA and pkgtool and netconfig. Of course, people can always search, but stickies would help eliminate some of the redundant questions.

Yeah, I think about this idea every time I see someone make a new thread on the topic "how do I get the mouse wheel to work?". :) A sticky thread with hints for the basic (and endlessly repeated) setup questions would be very nice...and, of course, a death threat towards forum users that don't read it nor try the search function before posting. :D

That's an advantage of a few stickies - search results can be confusing, overwhelming, deficient, whatever. But there's little excuse for missing a thread in a few stickies with your issue right in the title. I think the death threats would be warranted then. :D

Good idea...I think that at the very least, a Slackware FAQ would be beneficial. Perhaps the Mods would be more willing (not that they aren't already) if we (the users) gathered the information so all they have to do is double check it and post the Sticky.

while it is a good idea, it may not produce the results expected

face it, while you can make a sticky thread about the common problems, each problem is going to have its own variable and thus to try to post these "pieces of advice" may not benefit the majority of users

the glory of these forums is the ability for actual human beings to take the time and render new advice for each individual with a problem; as a new thread is made (even if it is over a redundant subject) all advice will be geared and constructed in a way that the one in need will be best suited

the only sticky i see as a necessity is a sticky entitled "Use the Search Option for Common and Broad Topics" and within this thread can be a list of keywords to use to search or specific thread titles that has covered a good amount of information

*edit: the other problem with stickies is that it will either have to be a closed thread (in which case those topics will still appear over and over again) or if kept open, too many people will come into those thread and ask all sorts of questions and what we have then is a huge mess... (and those who realize this will now create those reduntant topics again)
these are the reasons why it would not be beneficial to make a sticky for actual common advice but rather links or references to other things

also, the only advice that should be given are certain commands that all slackers should know: su, alsaconf, halt, etc...
