modem problems

I have a us robotics modem external and I used it under slack 8.1 with kppp without any problems.
Now I have slack 9.0 and I canīt get it to work. If I try to dial up as a normal user it dials the number but then it disconnects, but if I do it as root i dials up nice but when Iīm connected it seems as Iīm not connected because I canīt do anything, webb browsers doesnīt work nor does irc and other Internet stuff.

I have no idea what I have done wrong so I hope you can help me.

You may need to put your ISPs DNS numbers in /etc/resolv.conf
Code:
domain infoave.net
nameserver 206.74.254.2
nameserver 204.116.57.2
I don't use slack, but have you checked to see if a user needs to be added to a ppp or pppuser group?

i did have pppd dying unexpectedly in slackware9.0 ... except it had happened a few times before, so i just worked around it by adding the noauth option to pppd ... as a result i have to run kppp as root.

arguably not elegant, and i'm not sure if it's secure, but it got me online.

If this is really bad, someone let me know. Ta

You can always open an x terminal and
Quote:
[phil@uilleann phil]$ su -
Password:
[root@uilleann root]# /sbin/ifup ppp0

I use pppsetup to set up the pcmcia modem on my laptop and I've never had problems with it....though kppp and the gnome thing wouldn't set it up right. I'm not sure how it would work with an external modem but give it a shot? Maybe someone else has run it?

Do you need to add your user to a pppuser group or something like that?

so run kppp as root ...
ALT+F2
type kppp (don't click run YET)
ALT+O
ALT+U
ALT+W
type your root password
and run the program. (you can create a shortcut that automatically runs it as root. You'll be asked for your password.

So never the less ... IS this a bad way to do it? What group would we need to add our users to, to let us use noauth on pppd without using root priviledges? (i'll check that ppp link, thanks fancypiper)
