MODEM problem (not winmodem) HELP me.

I purchased a hardware based internal PCI modem:

http://www.usr.com/products/home/hom...p?sku=USR5610B

It works great on winxp and suse 9.3 (Suse detects it immediately through the YAST). But somehow, slackware (my fav distro), does not really detect my modem or doesn't want to.

I ran cat /proc/pci and my modem is listed there in irq 5 I/O 0xd800
I tried to login via KDE kppp tool (which in my opinion is the easiest), and after querying the modem on all the available /dev/ttsy* kppp can't find it.

I turned off the computer and switched the modem to another PCI slot and cat /proc/pci found my modem in irq 11. But setting it up in kppp doesn't detect the modem on either /dev/ttsy*

lspci -vv shows my modem loud and clear...so slack sees it but can't access it?

I am pretty confident that the modem is /dev/ttys3 or COM4 in winxp. So I set it up that way... and kppp tells me the modem is busy. Other ports the modem is not found.

I tried pppsetup and set the modem /dev/ttsy3 and when I typed, as root, ppp-go or ppp-on I get: "error in script"

Since I cannot use the internet at this time in my apt, I am logging all this from memory and using my school's internet connection so I cannot post computer modem diarrhea here..

Setting up a modem should NOT be this hard, but apparently slack is notorious for old school configuration. What is another way for me to get this modem up and running?? Am I missing a "driver"? What information do I need to post?

You might need to run setserial to activate it on the com port. Something like: setserial /dev/ttyS0

Then do pppsetup.

PCI modems are usually located at ttyS4 and above since some computers actually have 4 serial ports.

I have a usr5610b, it is on ttyS4.

If you do pppsetup _before_ kppp config, you might have a problem with crappy downloads.
I did, same as on 10.1, still haven't remebered how to fix that.

If you are going to use kpp, don't run pppsetup at all.

I used a USR5610 before getting broadband in Slackware 9 ->10.0. I do not know if it has changed but Pat V. had an install script that populated the /dev directory and would set up a symbolic link with /dev/modem pointing to a ttyS* port. To see where yours is set run
"ls -al /dev/modem" as root. For the USR5610 it needs to point to /dev/ttyS4. If it is pointing to the wrong ttyS * port delete /dev/modem "rm /dev/modem" and remake the link with "ln -s /dev/ttyS4 /dev/modem". The run pppsetup using /dev/modem as your device. Note that only root will be able to run ppp-on to start the modem. I have not run kde in a long time but I think all you need to do is make the correct link and then run kppp setup.

If you want to run the modem as a user (kppp does for you) there are some previous posts on how to change the modem permssions.
