The README_MATE.txt files in the respective subdirectories provide a step by step guide for handling the update batch. I have not yet updated the Installation Guide on the Microlinux website. I'll have to do that as soon as I find some time this week.
Thank you for this massive update.
I've seen in other LQ threads that there is a growing interest in MATE as an alternative to XFCE. Those discussions convinced me to give it a try and since you informed that MLED would migrate to MATE, I eagerly awaited this update.
However, I'll take some time to migrate to MATE because I don't have a full MLED computer (I added some stuff from here and there).
So I would like first to upgrade the multimedia applications I retrieved from your repository (openshot, audacity..). I see that there has been a lot of rebuilds. Can I safely upgrade my multimedia packages without first installing the MATE desktop or did you introduce some sort of dependency to the MATE desktop in those rebuilds?

I guess you can safely update your multimedia apps without any problems in the meantime.
A picture is worth a thousand words, as we say in my native Austria. So here's what you get.
Instruction for upgrading are included (README_MATE.txt), but I have yet to update the detailed Installation Guide. ETA is around wednesday or thursday.
My menu was populated but not all the icons appeared. I will fix this in the main menu configuration module.
Wallpapers Slackware 150MB, this seems to be overkill seeing that MATE comes with wallpapers.
Thunderbird and Firefox are already in Slackware do they need to be replaced?
Libreoffice langpacks for France and Germany, should these be an extra download?
GDM en Francais, heuresement je parle un peux Francais ( but only a little and very badly ), could there be an internationalizastion step? This would take care of the question above as well.
JDK full, would the runtime not be sufficient?

Hope this is OK

The menu entries are customized with the cleanmenu.sh script in the respective tools/ directories. The desktop is supposed to use the default Elementary Icon Theme.
If you don't want the slack-wallpapers package, you are free not to install it. My users like to have a plethora of wallpapers to choose from, that's why I included all these. MLED is not an embedded system.
I don't replace Firefox and Thunderbird, I only add language packs. The same for Libreoffice language packs. Don't forget, MLED's primary goal is to provide a rock-solid no-bullshit production desktop for my clients, who speak french, german and english. Hence the i18n packages.
I will update the documentation for the updated MLED, mainly the Installation Guide. I'll keep you posted.
for client, i think JRE is sufficient and i agree with Samac
I know, but JDK is needed to build VirtualBox (which some of my clients need to run a virtualized RHEL WS). And since JRE is included in JDK, I went straight for JDK.

I think it's an optional dependency and only needed when you need java binding
Here's from virtualbox's README:
Quote:
If you want to build the java bindings, pass JAVA=yes to the script.
This will require jdk as optional dependency.
@samac: now we know why your initial user configuration was weird. Try again, it should work nicely this time.
Thanks, just my luck for the update to come in just after I fixed it all by hand.
Have you tried Shotwell as a camera/photo manager? It downloads from your camera, files your pictures by date and allows you to process them. I think that it would appeal to Picassa users.

I'd recommend fotoxx, for which a SlackBuild is available @ http://slackbuilds.org. I was a Picasa user. Fotoxx' UI can look slightly unusual at first, but IMO it's by far the most powerful and versatile program in that field.
