You can use "dd" to create an exact ISO image of any DVD in the drive.

Suppose the device that you mount is /dev/hdc , then first unmount the device from /mnt/cdrom and then run
Code:
dd if=/dev/hdc of=slackwaredvd.iso
If your DVD device is not called /dev/hdc please substitute the correct name in the above command.

Cheers, Eric

That's the same reason why you can run 'md5sum' on a device node (/dev/hdc) and get the checksum of the image you burned (if it was correctly burned).

Of course Alien Bob I was use it to create rootdisks and bootdisks to install in the OLD DAYS the slackware 3.3, I just forget this awesome tool, Disk Dump or dd.

Thank you

And just one questions:
How to backup a HDD using dd or other tool, but without backup the free space from the drive? Thank you.

Hi,

Learn The DD Command Revised is a great LQ post. You can also find other useful links in the post 'Slackware LQ Suggestions!'.

you can use rsync to mirror a disk ( for daily backup...)
or you can use partimage to make a snapshot of a disk (without the free space) you can compress the data for smaller images (but the risk for loosing data is higher).
