Mixed media Install - CD / loopback?

Hello! I'm trying to install Slackware 11 on my new machine via a mixture of CD and mounting iso images from my existing (Windows) drive. FYI, I have no floppy drive. The Slackware FAQ states that I can do it without a floppy but I'd need a DOS partition which I cannot provide.

I have all 5 of the install isos on my drive and the target is a USB drive that has/had an image of Slackware 10 that will no longer boot, I'm supposing because it was never set-up to boot from a USB drive...

Firstly, is this even possible?

If so what is the absolute minimum I need to put onto the (boot) CD?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

ps Why? I only have 1 CDR available at the moment plus I thought it'd be interesting exercise :-)

Hi

Just burn Slackware CD 1 and install using the cd-rom, you will then be able to access the other iso's which are on your windows drive.

You may have a problem if your bios doesn't support booting from usb in which case you will have to make a usb boot cd.

Shameless plug, get it here http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=521390

This will hopefully allow you to boot your existing usb image, but you will need a working linux installation to make it (live-cd?)

Or you could get more cd-r's.

oh DARN it! All was going well, or at least I thought it was, until I tried to reboot the USB installation and I got kernel panic errors... I should have read on to start with!

Samac, can you recommend a live-cd to use for the purpose of following your guide - there isn't a Slackware version that I can find. I can't use an internal hd to layout out a working install because it is completely committed to WinXp and I just can't afford to mess with it.

ps They new CDs have arrived! :D

I use ultimate boot cd full version 3.4, but I dont see why it shouldn't work with any live distribution.
