minimal slackware install
I have been surfing around a bit for finding a minimal install of slackware. I have compared the sources which I have found.
My intention was to have a fast slack with nothing missing and nothing superfluous. I'd like to have: - X (fluxbox) - a webbrowser - developping tools for compiling packages I do NOT like to have: - gnome, kde... - 3 or 4 different webbrowser, text-editors... this was what I came out: a/ aaa_base-9.1.0-noarch-1 a/ acpid-1.0.2-i486-1 a/ bash-2.05b-i486-3 a/ bin-8.5.0-i386-1 a/ bzip2-1.0.2-i386-4 a/ coreutils-5.0-i486-4 a/ cxxlibs-5.1.0-i486-1 a/ dcron-2.3.3-i386-4 a/ devfsd-1.3.25-i386-2 a/ devs-2.3.1-noarch-18 a/ e2fsprogs-1.34-i486-1 a/ elflibs-9.1.0-i486-2 a/ elvis-2.1_4-i386-1 a/ etc-5.1-noarch-5 a/ findutils-4.1.7-i386-1 a/ floppy-5.4-i386-3 a/ gawk-3.1.3-i486-1 a/ gettext-tools-0.14.1-i486-2 a/ glibc-solibs-2.3.2-i486-1 a/ glibc-zoneinfo-2.3.2-noarch-1 a/ gmp-4.1.2-i486-2 a/ grep-2.5-i386-2 a/ gzip-1.3.3-i386-2 a/ hdparm-5.3-i386-1 a/ hotplug-2003_08_05-noarch-3 a/ infozip-5.50-i486-2 a/ kbd-1.08-i386-2 a/ kernel-ide-2.4.22-i486-2 a/ kernel-modules-2.4.22-i486-2 a/ less-381-i386-1 a/ logrotate-3.6.8-i486-1 a/ module-init-tools-0.9.14-i486-2 a/ openssl-solibs-0.9.7b-i486-2 a/ pkgtools-9.1.0-i486-4 a/ procps-2.0.16-i486-2 a/ reiserfsprogs-3.6.11-i486-1 a/ sed-3.02-i486-1 a/ shadow-4.0.3-i486-8 a/ sysklogd-1.4.1-i486-8 a/ syslinux-2.06-i386-1 a/ sysvinit-2.84-i486-36 a/ tar-1.13.25-i386-1 a/ umsdos-progs-1.13-i386-1 a/ usbutils-0.11-i386-1 a/ util-linux-2.12-i486-1 ap/ alsa-utils-0.9.6-i486-1 ap/ diffutils-2.8.1-i386-1 ap/ groff-1.17.2-i386-3 ap/ man-1.5l-i386-1 ap/ man-pages-1.60-noarch-1 ap/ sudo-1.6.6-i386-1 ap/ texinfo-4.5-i386-1 ap/ vim-6.2-i486-1 d/ autoconf-2.57-noarch-1 d/ autofs-3.1.7-i386-1 d/ automake-1.7.7-noarch-1 d/ bin86-0.16.11-i386-1 d/ binutils-2.14.90.0.6-i486-1 d/ bison-1.35-i386-1 d/ byacc-1.9-i386-1 d/ ccache-2.2-i386-1 d/ flex-2.5.4a-i486-2 d/ gcc-3.2.3-i486-2 d/ gcc-g++-3.2.3-i486-1 d/ gdb-5.3-i386-1 d/ kernel-headers-2.4.22-i386-1 d/ libtool-1.4.3-i486-2 d/ m4-1.4-i386-2 d/ make-3.80-i386-1 d/ pkgconfig-0.15.0-i486-1 l/ alsa-driver-0.9.6-i486-3 l/ alsa-lib-0.9.6-i486-1 l/ alsa-oss-0.9.6-i486-1 l/ 1.4.0-i486-1 l/ db1-1.85-i386-1 l/ db2-2.4.14-i386-1 l/ db3-3.3.11-i386-3 l/ expat-1.95.6-i486-2 l/ gdk-pixbuf-0.22.0-i486-1 l/ glib-1.2.10-i386-2 l/ glib2-2.2.3-i486-1 l/ glibc-2.3.2-i486-1 l/ gnet-2.0.4-i486-1 l/ gtk+-1.2.10-i386-3 l/ gtk+2-2.2.4-i486-1 l/ imlib-1.9.14-i486-2 l/ lesstif-0.93.91-i486-1 l/ libtermcap-1.2.3-i486-6 l/ libusb-0.1.7-i386-1 l/ libxml2-2.5.11-i486-2 l/ libxslt-1.0.33-i486-1 l/ ncurses-5.3-i386-1 l/ orbit-0.5.17-i386-1 l/ pango-1.2.5-i486-1 l/ popt-1.7-i386-1 l/ readline-4.3-i486-3 l/ slang-1.4.9-i486-1 l/ t1lib-1.3.1-i386-2 l/ utempter-0.5.2-i486-2 l/ zlib-1.1.4-i386-3 n/ autofs-3.1.7-i386-1 n/ dhcp-3.0pl2-i386-1 n/ dhcpcd-1.3.22pl4-i386-1 n/ inetd-1.79s-i486-3 n/ nc-1.10-i386-1 n/ pidentd-3.0.16-i386-1 n/ wget-1.8.2-i386-2 x/ ttf-bitstream-vera-1.10-noarch-2 x/ xfree86-4.3.0-i486-5 x/ xfree86-devel-4.3.0-i486-3 x/ xfree86-fonts-misc-4.3.0-noarch-2 x/ xfree86-fonts-scale-4.3.0-noarch-2 xap/ fluxbox-0.1.14-i386-1 xap/ mozilla-1.4-i486-3 xap/ rxvt-2.7.10-i486-1 Which packages can I also leave out? Any more suggestions or remarks. |
that's not a bad list there... See my HOWTO to see how much can be left out.
http://home.earthlink.net/~gnashley/...ix8_1howto.htm I have a great 140-160MB install but without the /d packages. Actually I have a list for a 20MB Slackware install! You can't do much with it, but it does illustrate what packages are absolutely essential. |
I have compared the following sources:
http://home.earthlink.net/~gnashley/...ix8_1howto.htm http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...l&pagenumber=2 the packages list of zipslack a few other sources on the net which I don't find back |
For the love of God, use the search function.
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ckware+install http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ckware+install (scroll down on this one) http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ckware+install This question keeps coming back again and again. Why not keep it in one thread? BTW you might take a look at Linux From Scratch. It's a great step by step manual for compiling a complete distro from source code. Once you've gone through it, you'll have a much better understanding of what all the different packages do. Enjoy! --- Cerbere |
