Minicom headache

Trying to learn how to fax from Slackware 10.2 and
decide to try Efax first. A number of problems arose
when first trying to use it so I thought I'd use
minicom to test the modem.

Unfortunately minicom (1.2) hangs when initiated. The timer
on the info bar at the bottom of the interface shows no time
running but 'online'. The modem RS & TR front panel indicators
light up, but typing input such as "AT" does not echo (even
after echoing is turned on) and there is no modem response.

Tried initiating '+++' to take the modem out of command mode
if that was the problem, but again no response.

Modem is Creative ModemBlaster DE5620-2 "Flash 56 II External"
which appears on the Linux modem compatability list.

Kernel
Serial driver version 5.05c (2001-07-08) with MANY_PORTS SHARE_IRQ
SERIAL_PCI ISAPNP enabled
ttyS00 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A

Device is set correctly in minicom based upon info above.
(Also 9600 8N1)

There is no 'getty' in inittab for this device so no interference
from a logon process.

I should be able to figure this out, but I have poured over it
for too long now and need some new perspective.

Any suggestions?

Never mind!

Tried to use Hyperterminal in Windows and also
no dice. Modem diagnostics say the modem is not
responding. I can see the panel lights flashing
during this test.

The modem is bad.
