migrating from mandrake to slackware
 

that's what I'll be doing soon, so I just wanted to know if anyone already tried this.

Also, does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on how to do this smoothly? Do I have to format the partition to install slack or can I install it over mandrake without breaking stuff?

There is no upgrade path from Mandrake to Slackware. They are 2 different distros with their own set ups and their own package management. All you can do is to back up your data and install Slackware - entirely overwriting Mandrake. If /home is on a seperate partition, you may be able to keep that as it is at the moment.

I'm a total newb (started with Linux a week ago) and I went with Mandrake initially. After some searching around I found the Slackware community to be extremely helpful and resourceful thus made the switch. That and the fact that everyone says Slack is the best out there made me want to give it a try.

I succeeded in installing it on an old PIII 500 with 128MB RAM and 32MB Video and it was fun stuffing it up a couple of times only to learn how to install it very well now.

As others before me have welcomed me, I welcome you to the Slackmunnity. :)

One thing I will mention is that the default uid for the user is 1000 in slackware and 500 in other distros I've used (SuSE, RH). This may come into play if you keep a large amount of files from a previous install's home directory or have a file server. You may have the same user name, but you may have trouble accessing your files - depending on the permissions - since they will have a different owner by number. This is an easy fix of course, but it's easier if you know to expect it and plan accordingly by specifying the correct name AND number when you recreate your user in slack.

I think I'll just backup my data and reformat the partition to install slack.

speaking of which: do u guys know if slack10 has support for the k7s8xe motherboard chipset? Which version of kde does it come with? which version of X? which kernel? Is it stock or modified?
