Been There, Done That.

I think everyone is giving up on these things. After two days of scouring the net and trying everything to no avail (and totally screwing up my system in the process)...Maybe I should give up too and buy a Logitech or Kensington tomorrow morning and then do something else with what's left of my three-day weekend.

I have finally just plugged in my Logitech wireless mouse - now everything is fine.

For some reason the Logitech works find. Same connection, same driver. There may be some way to get the ms one to work but I cannot find it.

Are you using a 2.4.X kernel or a 2.6.X kernel? The 2.4.X kernel driver for USB mice doesn't understand the Microsoft Wireless Mouse protocol. The 2.6.X kernel does and seems to fix these sorts of mismapped button problems.

Ahh, the pieces began to fall in place.

That probably is my problem; I am still using the 2.4 kernel series (the default one). When I ever go to 2.6 I will be sure to try again.
