microsoft.com kills kde

I'm not joking, And i don't want to.
It happens on my box, if i use the microsoft.com search engine and look for "linux" kde dies unexpectedly.
I have slackware 9.1
kernel 2.4.22
kde 3.1.4

What can it be?

dalek 01-08-2004 08:30 AM

You made Billy mad. I went to it and got articles about how to REMOVE linux and INSTALL windoze, I mean windows. That guy must be stupid if he thinks I'm taking my Gentoo off.

Beats me.

Later

:D :D :D :D

dalek 01-08-2004 08:34 AM

He's likely mad at me now. I went back and searched for "remove windows and install linux" in quotes and it said I can't spell. Crappie OS, crappie search engine. What else is new.

  :D :D

tcaptain 01-08-2004 08:43 AM

hehe you can always use google :D Does it happen only for "linux"?

What errors do you get? Maybe there's a clue there.

I mean we should at least take a look at what's going on in your install before we put on our tinfoil hats right?

sathia 01-08-2004 09:47 AM

how can I show you that this is true?

dalek 01-08-2004 10:40 AM

I was wondering the same thing. I have no clue what it could be.

:D :D

sathia 01-08-2004 01:34 PM

tht's awful.
i can't understand what's the matter

tcaptain 01-08-2004 01:41 PM

so when you say it "kills" KDE you don't get any error messages on your screen?

Do you see ANY messages? I'm assuming that you get back to command line?

Can you give us more concrete details (or ANY details beyond "It kills KDE")? Perhaps we can help fix the problem?

yes, that's it.

i reach the command line.
with no significative errors i think.

but i have to say that it happens only if the first search is "linux" with others word it works fine, and then if i write linux after a "correct" search it shows the right results.

whrere can i find some log?

poison 01-08-2004 03:35 PM

hmmm...that would make me respond quickly and tell them my opinion with something like:
Code:

#/bin/bash
for i in `seq 1 1000`;
do
wget -U"Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Konqueror/3.1.94; Linux 2.4.25; X11; i686; en, en_US; <your favourite M$ flame>) (KHMTL, like Gecko)" --referer="http://www.fuckmicrosoft.com/" -Coff -r -l2 --delete-after http://www.microsoft.com
done

it's questionable if it's worth the bandwith and if they will notice =P

Kovacs 01-08-2004 04:11 PM

Get the facts on Windows and Linux :D

What the hell were you doing searching with Microsoft anyway?

xushi 01-08-2004 05:43 PM

rofl @ www.fuckmicrosoft.com ...

Geez

People...people...put DOWN the tinfoil hats...

I hate M$ with a passion but:

1 - We still don't know WHAT the problem is...now considering the fact that on NONE of the 8 linux machines I have access to I've been able to duplicate this error I REALLY doubt microsoft is doing ANYTHING to "kill kde" when searching for linux (beyond some really twisted facts and astroturphing but that's for another thread.

2 - That means that the problem is at Sathia's PC and if it happens there, it could happen elsewhere...forget microsoft for a minute and let's see if we can figure out what's wrong instead of screaming "f**k microsoft" like a bunch of 13 year old script kiddiez m'kay?

Sathia:

You say you see no error messages when KDE crashes and you return to command line...so is there NOTHING at all on your screen except a prompt? I know if I kill X on my machine there are a few messages even when nothing's wrong.

Here are a couple of log files you can check and see if you see anything unusual:

(note: these are in Mandrake, but you should have them either the same or close equivalent)

/var/log/XFree86.0.log
/var/log/messages
/var/log/kdm.log (if you run the KDE Display manager - ie you boot into X)
/var/log/kernel/errors
/var/log/kernel/info
/var/log/kernel/warnings

Lets get a grip people....

I was joking ^^
ok...I sometimes really would like to do something like that...
but I'm good in surpressing my feelings you know =(

sathia 01-10-2004 01:07 PM

Thank you very much @ all of you

but it still happens...

i've lokeed all the file, tcaptain told me to, but i can't see anything interesting.
i'm planning to make myself a video to show you this.
As soon as my father borrow his camera...

it's sad, i mean, ok, it happens only to sathia, but if you look to your hard disk while doing the search, you'll see some light blinking, i just wonder why...
