I tried to install : amsn ,yahoo messenger and gaim but i didn't succeed. (my status : i am a host in a large LAN ,and my LAN has a proxy ; i also know that i am not in the DNS because the others cant ping me by name but by IP address )
When i tried to run gaim it gives my "Proxy error 502" or "Unable to connect to the remote computer" .the same with ymessenger.Amsn gives me another headache :it need a TLS module - but when amsn tries to automatically download the module it can't. Why ? (anyway: i downloaded TLS module but i don't knot how to install it! HEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLPPP!)
if the others can't ping you by name but can by ip-address, then they don't know your machine's hostname. adding it to their /etc/hosts file helps. the file should look like this:
#
# /etc/hosts: static lookup table for host names
#
etc. where MachineNames are the names of some computhers in the ethernet, and aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd and eee.fff.ggg.hhh are their ip-addresses. after saving this on the machines they should be able to ping by name too. dns server can be defined in /etc/resolv.conf by adding a line like
nameserver iii.jjj.kkk.lll
where iii.jjj.kkk.lll is the ip-address of your ISP's dns-server... I'm not sure what you should do with Gaim and proxy, because I don't use Gaim that much and proxy not at all, but go to gaim.sourceforge.net (wasn't that their homepage?) and see some help section or FAQ about proxy stuff...
yup..I guess it's somewhere in Windows\ or Windows\System or something...but the search tool does it.
after you've edited the file, open up a ms-dos-window-thingie and you should be able to use ping command with the machine name instead of ip. tough I'm not sure if you need to restart windows or something after editing the file..linux doesn't have to be, but what I've learned of Windoze is that it's almost every time a good idea to reboot if you did something
I downloaded Kopete and installed it with KDE package manager, but can't get it to run. Are there any simple instructions somewhere that lists dependencies, etc. with how to get it connected??
Try running it in a konsole window and look for error messages - another thing you can do is run "ldd /path/to/kopete" to check if your missing any required libs.
Thanks Aussie for the quick response. When I tried running it in konsole, I got the following error: error loading shared libraries: libkresources.so.1 How do I find and install this???
