mc and pan SLOW in Slackware 14

Currently running Slackware64 14 and I've noticed that mc (Midnight Commander) starts up really slow unless I change my iptables firewall to block all outgoing connections. This behavior disappears if I recompile mc with the SlackBuild while removing the --enable-vfs-smb option from the ./configure. I have contacted the developers for mc, but they have not responded for a few days now so I'm wondering if anyone else has stumbled upon this as well OR if my samba config is bad.

Other thing is with pan, the newsgroup reader. When I'm downloading a few files it looks like pan is decoding them MUCH slower than I'm downloading and my connection isn't that fast. By the time the download is finished, only the first couple of files have been decoded. This didn't happen on 13.37 so again, I'm wondering if anyone else has witnessed this.

for mc:
If you didn't set your hostname during the install, there's probably not a '127.0.0.1 hostname' entry in /etc/hosts. Add that (but with your hostname) and mc will start fine. Not sure about pan.

Never ever add 127.0.0.1 custom.hostname to /etc/hosts. 127.0.0.1 has to be localhost and localhost only, or a bunch of things break.

If the machine doesn't have network access, create a dummy interface with another address (like 192.168.0.1) and add this to /etc/hosts.
