MATE 1.8 vs. Compiz : no way to have window decorations

Hi,

I've been using Compiz for a while with Xfce, and it's working perfectly. Now I'm playing with it under MATE 1.8 (thanks Willy and Chess), and there's no way to have window decorations. I've googled around for a couple hours, tried about every possible suggestion and all possible combinations, but to no avail.

Any idea how to get this to work?

I think I tried to do that too but on MATE 1.6, if I am not mistaken compiz is incompatible with it.

Compiz 0.8 was meant to work with Metacity back in the ol' Gnome 2.32 days.

So being able to use it nowadays is kind of a pain in the a**.

Anyway, like you said kikinovak, Compiz somehow plays nice with xfwm4.

I'm pretty sure you've tried what's advised in the post install text file from SBo with MATE :

http://slackbuilds.org/slackbuilds/1...E.POST_INSTALL

But perhaps I'm wrong on that point

I would suggest you to test Compton out.

It's not as powerful as Compiz, but it offers a proper compositing with shadows and fade-in/out animations for your windows.

I don't know how this one would react on Mate, but on Xfce it's a great xfwm4 replacement.

Just my two cents.

I came across the exact same blog post

Now I'm enjoying my tear-free compositing on Xfce that used to bother me while watching some movies in full screen.

What do you mean by that? I never noticed anything bothering me.

Quite a few people got Compiz working really well with MATE 1.6. As far as I am aware no one has even attempted it with MATE 1.8 until now. I will ask around and see what replies I get.

Here! I got Compiz working in mate 1.8 using my ati open source drivers with no problems. Even the emerald window decerator works. I just use fusion-icon to configure it and I never have any issues

Would you mind sharing your setup, e. g. the configuration steps you took to make it work?

I'll do my best to recall what I did to make it work (I got it working great back in MATE 1.6, but upgraded to 1.8 and compiz continues to function as normal)

What I did was install all compiz packages in the following order as listed here: http://slackbuilds.org/repository/14...m/?search=ccsm

Once done with that, I launched fusion-icon, right clicked it on the system tray, and enabled all the needed plugins in the settings manager (make sure you check the box for windows decorations on the settings manager for compiz or the windows decorations won't work). Then, right click fusion-icon again, you select window manager: Compiz and Window Decorator: Emerald.

There was not much to it for me, that's all I did and compiz, along with the emerald decorator, works fine without any noticeable issues. If this helps at all, I 'm glad!

That's more or less exactly my standard procedure too. Except it doesn't work this time. And according to Google, I'm not the only user having this problem. I'm puzzled.

Have you tried the GTK window decorator (can be selection in the fusion-icon thing in the system tray)? That one seems to work for me, maybe it will for you too. Maybe for some reason, Emerald doesn't want to work

I got compiz working with MATE 1.8 over here, I am using Emerald for my window decorator and it is working fine. One thing I did however is upgrade my compiz release to 0.8.9. This release never got pushed to the mirrors but it is on the compiz git page. Here is a slackbuild for it if you are interested, I also fixed the build to re-enable the KDE window decorator if anybody is still using compiz with KDE.

Here's a thread I started on the MATE forum about this, at least 1 other user has it working (not distro specific)

I run 0.8.8 currently. I was gonna just upgrade for the heck of it, but I can't open that file you shared, I get the following error:

Code:
gzip: stdin: not in gzip format
tar: Child returned status 1
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
