MATE 1.4 tries to open folder with Audacious ?!?
Hi,
I have MATE 1.4 installed on Slackware 14.0. It's more or less the stock MATE installed from Willy's and Chess' binaries on the MSB repo, with a few eye candy addons.
It's fast and snappy and pretty much like Ubuntu 10.04 should have been. There's one strange bug that's nagging me. When I click on the icon representing the Home folder in the Places menu (I think it's called that, take a look at the screenshot), MATE doesn't launch the Caja file manager, but the Audacious media player (of all things).
Something is very wrong here.

If you have a poke around in Mates settings, you can change it. Look for something to do with file associations. Sorry I can't help further, but I am on XFCE you see. Don't worry though, its not a major issue.

OK, I finally found it. Some very weird default configuration in the "Preferred Applications" section.

I know you solved it, but this is addressed in the KNOWN_ISSUES.TXT document. It has to do with xdg's default handlers. Also, I think you meant MATE 1.6 if you are using our scripts or packages at MSB.
Also, this thread has some info:

Yes, that's 1.6 indeed.
