Note for users that prefer to compile manually:
General:
master branch is tracking latest releases (either stable/development) and always using Slackware Current as base so things may break when current development starts again.
MSB:
master branch in git is now tracking 1.15 development cycle with some new deps and more porting to GTK+3. If you want to build MATE 1.14 by yourself against Slackware 14.2, please use 14.2-mate-1.14 branch. GTK3 branch has been rebased against latest master changes.
CSB:
master branch will keep rolling out Cinnamon releases, including major upgrade (3.0 -> 3.x) while Slackware 14.2 packages will be built from 14.2 branch.
I've installed MATE on Slackware 14.2 and I'm impressed - it's awesome
Just one issue: nm-applet is running, but the icon in the panel is missing upon reboot - the quickest way to restore it I've found is by restarting NetworkManager.
Is this a known issue?

does this issue persists after reboot or only happening the first time only?
Unfortunately, the script didn't work. Mind that nm-applet is running in background, I just don't see the icon in MATE's panel (next to the clock, with the default settings).
Restarting NetworkManager makes it appear; in particular, even just *stopping* the service makes the icon visible.
I tried reinstalling NetworkManager and network-manager-applet with no results.
can you check whether you have /etc/xdg/autostart/nm-applet.desktop ?
i saw in VM and also in my wife's computer that also use 14.2 and MATE 1.14 nm-applet is there
This screenshot was taken from a fresh installation of Slackware 14.2 in a VM used to build MATE 1.14 packages: https://mateslackbuilds.github.io/images/mate1.png
yes, /etc/xdg/autostart/nm-applet.desktop is present.
This machine has been updated from current to 14.2 stable, and then I've added MATE.
I suspect something went weird in the process. I'll investigate further and report here in case of success. Thanks for your help anyways!
